Roche Emmets hosted St Brides in the Sheelin Cup at Pairce Roiche on Friday evening at 7.30 pm.
Referee: David Loughran
Roche Emmets 0-13 St Brides 3-13
Both teams were understrength with about 4 regulars missing for each
side. St Brides started the game brightly racing into a 0-7 to 0-1 lead
after 11 minutes. The St Brides attack had the better of the Roche
defence in this early spell. It was practically point for point from
that stage onwards until half-time.
In the second half Roche upped their performance and added 4 further
points to their tally in the early stages while holding St Brides
scoreless until the 43rd minute. The deficit was now only a kick of the
ball between the sides at this stage and the ascendency was well and
truly with Roche. However, the next few minutes changed the game
completely. With Philip Quinn running at the St Brides defence and
refusing to fist an expected hand pass to Barry O’Hare who appeared free
inside and would surely have been in on goal, Quinn decided to shoot
for a point himself and failed to register a score with a bad wide. The
resulting kickout quickly reached the other end of the field and with
St Brides forty yards man getting in behind Sean O’Hare the ball found
the top
corner of the net leaving Aidan McCoy with no chance. A minute later
Robbie O’Hanlon gifted St Brides forty yard man again with another
glorious goal opportunity
which he gladly accepted after Robbie’s defensive fist pass fell short
of its intended target. The game was well and truly over at this stage
and Roche introduced a number of substitutes. Paudie Callaghan
finished
strong for Roche adding 3 fine points from play kicking with either
foot. St Brides substitute added another goal towards the end of the
match after another Roche error in defense.
