Saturday, March 5th at 2pm in Kilbride
Kilbride and Elphin played some good football and provided plenty of excitement for their supporters in the opening game of the O’Rourke Cup. Played in ideal conditions, Kilbride were quick to settle and fired over two points before Fintan Cregg replied with a free for Elphin. Two more scores for Kilbride were again answered by Fintan Cregg. Kilbride then hit a purple patch and fired over three points before Elphin replied with three of their own from Ronan Brady, Colm Rock and another Fintan Cregg free. However Kilbride finished the half strongest with a long range effort to leave them three ahead at the break on a score line of 8 points to 5. Gerry Lohan and Conor Devanney were causing Elphin’s defence a lot of problems and Kilbride’s tactic of retreating quickly into defence meant that Elphin’s forwards were crowded out and attacks broke down on several occasions.
The second half started with a goal chance for Kilbride which produced a top class save from Ronan Collins. Elphin took advantage of this let off and Colm Rock fired over two points before Conor Devanney replied with what turned out to be Kilbride’s only score of the second half. Shane Beirne scored a good point for Elphin and it wasn’t long before the equalising score arrived from a Frankie Cregg free midway through the second half. After that it was end to end with both sides having chances to get the all important next score. Kilbride’s hopes were raised with the sending off of Frankie Cregg late on. With time up Fintan Cregg edged Elphin ahead but with five minutes of injury time Kilbride still had chances to grab a share of the spoils. However, Elphin’s defence stood firm and a good break saw Colm Rock compose himself before slotting over the insurance point with the final kick.
So Elphin take the two points but both managers will be pleased with the performance of their charges.
