Nano Nagle National School Fethard will host a sale of Third World Goods on Tuesday 24th February at 7pm in the school. ‘Sharing Fair’ is a project of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd which markets items made by women in developing countries whose circumstances have brought them in contact with the sisters. One hundred percent of the proceeds is returned to the women and girls in the form of new orders, providing them with hope, dignity and sustainability.
Ms Rita Kenny (right), coordinator of ‘Challenge to Change’ project at Nano Nagle National School, is photographed at the Good Shepherd Centre in Waterford with Sr Marie (left) and Sr. Catherine who will have their ‘Sharing Fair’ products for sale in Fethard on 24th February.
“The experience of globalisation for some of the world’s most vulnerable people has been increasing income inequality, job losses and environmental damage. ‘Fairtrade’ pays producers a fair price for goods, giving consumers the opportunity to help redress the imbalance between rich and poor and help break the poverty cycle. It has experienced increasing success in the past ten years.”
We ask you to please come along and lend your support at 7pm in the school on Tuesday 24th February.

An Intimate Night
Mick Hanly has a way with words. He started the night apologising to the audience in McCarthy’s because he had a throat infection which hindered his singing and a finger injury from a gardening accident which nearly halted his guitar playing, but he fought on, and won.
His skill as a wordsmith kept the audience as attentive when explaining his songs as when he was singing them. Mick has forged a living from music since the 1960s when he gave up the pensionable job with the ESB, to his parent’s dismay, to forge a life in the music industry.
Mick’s songs are about real life situations, warts and all. There was a song to his parents who had passed away before he had his major success with ‘Past the Point of Rescue’, a song to his stepson, a keeper of ‘shellakabookies’ as a boy who ended up in the US marines as a slightly older boy, terrifying his parents until his tour of duty was over in Iraq, where 50 per cent of his platoon came home in coffins, as well as the poignant ‘My Love Is In America’, which he recorded with Dolores Keane, about a woman in Ireland wishing that her love was at home with her in the recessionary 1980s and not working abroad to support his family. Unfortunately, the song is topical once again as the Irish are heading overseas to support their families.
There was also a lot of good humoured banter. He spoke and sang of his early life as a musician doing what young men do, namely touring, carousing, getting pissed and suffering the consequences. And the audience enjoyed it. His voice finally gave way during ‘Past The Point Of Rescue’, but the audience were content to sing the chorus for him. It was an enjoyable intimate night. He has promised to return later in the year to sing and entertain in full voice. We look forward to the visit.
The next back room session is on Saturday 14th March with Philip Donnelly. Tickets are €10 from McCarthy’s. Thanks to Premier Music in Clonmel for the PA.

Hunting News
Scenting conditions, which had been very good since Christmas, seem to have deteriorated last week providing days of mixed fortune with regard to hunting. A fox from the first draw at Springhill, from Killenaule on Monday, crossed the road at Springhill House entrance. Hounds, slow to get away, hunted to the big covert. Hunting well here Charlie left and crossed the Laffansbridge Road to the big bog plantation where he was left. Drawing back over Church Hill, Laffansbridge Gorse held a brace. One of these ran across the road, through the Quarry to Burnchurch and left-handed to Hassett’s. Late in the afternoon a fox from Lahart’s ran down to Councillor John Fahey’s to the fir grove. By now, in a biting east wind, scent was almost non-existent and he was left.
A very good run was enjoyed from D’arcy’s Cross on Wednesday. Finding near David Flanagan’s they ran to Liam Quirkes, through Moorestown, over the hill, they ran to Walsh’s Plantation. Twenty minutes good covert hunting followed here before they pushed their fox out at the Coleman end. Crossing Walsh’s Avenue they ran through Joe Hanley’s where the fox did an about turn, running back through Des Hunt’s where they lost him. This was a good run of just over one hour.
Scent was very much improved for Cloneen, on Saturday, where hounds were hunting well. From the Quarry, at the village, they crossed the Fethard Road. Hunting through Britton’s, they ran to the fort on the Hilltop at O’Brien’s. Right-handed here they crossed the Cloneen / Drangan Road to O’Donovan’s, Tullacussane, where he got to ground.
From Ballinard, in the afternoon, they hunted through Harrington’s to Thomas Ronan’s and back to the Wood. From here they crossed the road to Rathkenny, through here and on to O’Halloran’s where he got to ground. A good day concluded with a nice run from Byrne’s Rock, down to Byrneskill they crossed the road to Grove. Crossing the road he ran right-handed to Muilleannbawn where he re-crossed the road, ran through Joe Murphy’s and back to Byrne’s where he got to ground in the Eleven Acres.
Racing Chat

With the White Heathers
Very poor scent was once again the order of the day at Drangan on Sunday. The first fox found in Knockroe was quickly lost, Mullally’s Gorse held. This fox, slow to leave the Gorse, was hunted back to Knockroe where they lost him. Drawing Glenmuicaduibhe they hunted down to the Bridge where he turned and was quickly lost. Knockuragh, in the afternoon, held a leash. Once again, hounds, which have been hunting well all season, could do little in the prevailing conditions.
Winner of the February monthly draw was Ms Nicola Neylon, second prize was won by Don Lyons. Nano Nagle choose Fairtrade as their ‘Challenge to Change’
Sr. Maureen, Principal of Nano Nagle National School, looking at some of the Fairtrade products acquired by the 5th and 6th class pupils as part of their ‘Challenge to Change’ project this year. National Fairtrade Fortnight takes place this year from 23 February to 8 March 2009. L to R Sr. Maureen Power, Rachel O’Meara, Michelle Carroll, Shauna Mackey and Anastasia Blake.
Fethard Nano Nagle girls have embarked once again on their ‘Challenge to Change’ project. This year the girls have chosen Fairtrade as their topic. As a prelude to their research, the girls had a look at the Millennium Goals. The Millennium Development Goals are eight international development goals that 192 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organisations have agreed to achieve by the year 2015.
The eight goals are: (1) Eradicate Extreme Poverty & Hunger; (2) Achieve Universal Primary Education; (3) Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women; (4) Reduce Child Mortality; (5) Improve Maternal Health; (6) Combat HIV/Aids, Malaria and other Diseases; (7) Ensure Environmental Sustainability; (8) Develop a Global Partnership for Development.
In 2001, recognizing the need to assist impoverished nations more aggressively, UN member states adopted the targets. The Millennium Development Goals aim to spur development by improving social and economic conditions in the world’s poorest countries.
The pupils of Nano Nagle National School will promote Fairtrade products at a special sale being organised at the school in conjunction with National Fairtrade Fortnight from 23 February to 8 March 2009. National Fairtrade Fortnight presents companies with a unique opportunity to market Fairtrade and is the perfect time for companies to improve visibility at point-of-sale, or even consider extending their range of Fairtrade certified products. The theme is ‘Make it Happen. Choose Fairtrade.’

Fires in Melbourne
Katie Knott, writing from Australia, sent us the following message offering help for anyone from Fethard trying to get in touch with relatives living in the Melbourne area.
“I don’t know if you have heard of the terrible fires around Melbourne, 170 people have been burned to death and the number is going up all the time. We were having temperatures of 45degs for so long it was about to happen. Nine hundred houses gone up in flames. If you hear of anyone around Fethard or near by who have relations in Melbourne and might be trying to get in touch with them please give them my email address and I will do my best to help them. We are getting lots of calls on the radio from Dublin and other parts of Ireland trying to find information on relations. My email address is: slainte2@bigpond.com”
Wall to Wall Books
Photographed at the Tipperariana Book Fair in Fethard are L to R: Dr. Willie Nolan and Monsignor Maurice Dooley.
Despite the threat of bad weather the 14th annual Tipperariana Book Fair attracted punters in their hundreds to Fethard Ballroom last Sunday afternoon. Only four book dealers, of the 32 booked in, were unable to travel due to road conditions. One dealer from the Midlands rang in saying that when he filled the van with books that he couldn’t then drive up out of his own yard!
A notable feature of this year’s fair was the enormous amount of books donated by the Fethard public to the Historical Society’s own stand. Takings from these book sales were doubled on previous years and the organisers are very grateful for this support.
Photographed at the Tipperariana Book Fair in Fethard are L to R: Fr. Tom Breen P.P. Fethard & Killusty, and Sr. Winnie, Presentation Convent Fethard.
A big attraction at the fair is the ‘on site’ café that sells the best tea and cakes on the island. A former professional sandwich maker joined the catering team this year and the out of town visitors, and locals alike, really appreciate the quality of fare on offer.
Missing from the team this year was Kitty Delany who is now well on the way to recovery after her very serious accidental fall and everyone wishes her full recovery and a return to the best of health.
Next year, the second Sunday in February falls on the 14th, St Valentine’s Day, so it will be easy to come up with a theme for the event. All going according to plan there should be a fifteenth annual Tipperariana Book Fair in 2010 and beyond as there seems to be a great demand out there for such an event in the dark days of winter.

Fethard Rugby Club News
Sam Manton in defence breaking away with the ball in their under-16 rugby match against Clonmel played in Fethard last weekend. Action photographs supplied by Kieran Butler.
Fethard under-14s travelled to Waterpark on Sunday of last week in their first game of the league which is now well behind schedule due to the adverse weather conditions that have forced many of the games to be cancelled.
They faced a big, strong Waterpark team and were unfortunate to be beaten, the scoreline certainly did not reflect the game these young men played and they were also without some of their key players. There were some big hits and great displays throughout the day with Luke Keating, Dylan Fitzgerald, Colin Maher, Ronan Fitzgerald, Jimmy Phelan and Gavin, Sean White, Nial Walsh, David Hayes, Tadhg Fogarty, Joss Murray, Willie Morgan, Kieran Walsh, Jack McCarthy all outstanding throughout. Well done to this team and keep up the good work.
Our under-16s hosted Clonmel and both teams produced some great rugby despite the very difficult underfoot conditions. These conditions seemed to bring the best out of both sides. Fethard were the first to put points on the board when Clonmel failed to control scrappy lineout ball giving the quick thinking Kieran Power the opportunity to pounce on the ball for the teams only try. The Fethard full-back narrowly missed the convert. The Clonmel lads reacted strongly and had Fethard under considerable pressure for the next 15 minutes and were rewarded with a try following a great passage of back play. During this period of Clonmel pressure the defensive work of the Fethard lads was immense with Shane Power, Colm Shanahan, Matt O’Sullivan, and Sam Manton putting in try saving tackles. The teams went into the break all square.
Fethard really upped the tempo in the second half and finished the stronger with Frankie Donovan crossing the line twice. He was held up the first time and was deemed to be held up the second time. All the Fethard players put in sterling performances with Andy Walsh and Matt Fitzgerald putting in great second half displays. The spirit shown by this team was a pleasure to witness and they can look forward to the cup competition with confidence. We send our good wishes to Joe Meagher and hope that his broken hand is on the mend.
Hunting News
From Ballagh, on Monday 2nd February, foxes proved very scarce. Drawing down to the railway line and back left-handed hounds did not find until reaching Delaney’s on the far side of the village. Charlie left covert very quickly, crossed the Ardmayle Road, near the school, and to ground after a short distance on the far side. Padraig Kennedy’s Wood did hold a few, none of which could be persuaded to leave. Across the road Marlo held a brace. Both of these were caught very quickly on top. Hounds found again in The Gorse further over, running back to Marlo where they gave him best after some good covert hunting.
From Rathronan on Saturday they had a nice run from the Ha’penny Bridge covert. Down through Carroll’s towards the Orchardstown Road, they hunted back to the Clonmel / Fethard Road which they crossed near the Half-Way, ran to the top of the Quarry on the far side and to ground. Drawing blank towards Donoughmore they found again near Clonacody. Hunting very well over the big tillage fields they hunted down to Mr John Ryan’s where they first lost him near the farm yard. Charlie must have a safe refuge here as at a Lisronagh meet they lost a fox in a similar manner at the same spot. Finding again in Ballinlough Bog they ran to the Clonmel Road at Clonacody Gallops. Doing a u-turn here they ran back through Jossestown right-handed across the road to Killerk Rock.
The Tipperary Foxhounds promote a Cross-Country Ride, next week, at Moyglass as a fund-raising project for Moyglass Community Hall in conjunction with the Hall Committee. Starting at 12 noon in Moyglass on Saturday, 21st February, the ride will cover natural hunting country. The course is not suitable for children on lead-rein ponies. The subscriptions are €50 for adults and €20 for children. Full details from, and any enquiries to, Ms Ginny Hutton, 086 837 1057.
With the White Heathers
The Thorny Bridge meet on Sunday last provided a day of what might be described as one of two parts and mixed fortunes. Moving down to Anner Castle hounds drew back through Seskin. Of the brace found in this area one went to ground quickly where found. Hounds caught the second one which they found on a thick edge just as vast. Vanning the hounds up to Kilmore fortunes improved immensely. Finding at the rear of Mr William Burke’s residence they hunted to Quigley’s. From here they ran to Mr Sandy Stokes’, crossed the road back to Burkes and ran through Mr John Michael Ormonde’s and to ground. Following two runs of shorter duration they finished the day at 5pm with a good twenty minutes run. Drawing the covert at Burke’s they ran to Davern’s at Tannersrath where he got to ground.
With regret we record the recent death of a great hunting stalwart, Mr Michael ‘Mick’ Kearney, Friarsgrange, Fethard. A fearless and excellent horseman in his youth he was a noted breaker and maker of young horses especially Hunters. Involved in his earlier years with the old Clonmel Harriers he whipped-in for a number of seasons to Master and Huntsman, Mr. Niall Shee. Mick, in later years, loved to recall great horses he rode, great hunts that he had and great fences jumped. Mick Kearney was bred to be a hunting man. He was nephew of Tom O’Shea, whipper-in to Mr Richard Burke, at Grove, and first cousin of Johnny O’Shea, long time huntsman of the Cheshire Foxhounds and rated one of the top huntsman in England during the second half of the twentieth century. Mick Kearney, in his retirement years, was a regular and knowledgeable follower of the Ballyluskey White Heathers.
The White Heather Committee extend sincere sympathy to his daughters, sons, grand-children and extended family. His wife, Rita, pre-deceased him just a few short months ago.
The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers meet on Sunday next, 15th February, in Drangan and a Lawn Meet at Orchardstown House on Sunday 22nd February. Both meets at 11am.

Have you started using your new phone number yet?
From the 3rd November 2008 all phone numbers in the 052 area have had two extra digits 61 added to their old number. The old numbers and new number will work together for a period of six months after which your old number will cease. If your old number begins with 3, as most Fethard numbers do, you will have to add 61 to the start, e.g. Fethard Community Office’s phone number 31000 will now change to 6131000.
Now is the time to start using the new number on your stationery and correspondence. Don’t leave it till the last minute to change or you’ll be sure to confuse your contacts and customers even more. For more details visit: www.eircom.net/phonenumberchange
