Intermediate hurling
We played Ballybacon-Grange in the final game of group 4 of the intermediate county championship in Golden on Sunday last. Needing a win to keep in the hunt for qualification we were quickly out of the blocks with Patrick Carey showing a clean pair of heels to his marker and flashing his shot over the bar. Carey then traded points with Brendan Cummins as we edged into a 6-3 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. We were dominating proceedings at this stage but a number of wides and efforts dropped short which allowed the men from the south to remain in the hunt and sure enough we were made to pay when Thomas Maher won a long delivery and planted the ball in the back of the net. We responded well with excellent scores from Jody Ryan and Pat Deegan but were rocked again as Ballybacon capitalised on an error in defence with a smart finish to the net. We showed great resolve however and rallied with points from Tom Hickey after a surging run and Brian Carey to regain the lead at the break where we led on a score-line of 0-12 to 2-05.
We got the second half underway in the best possible fashion with Brian Carey finishing to the net after evading a number of tackles. We maintained composure in defence with disciplined play restricting our opponents to efforts from out the field. We were finding scores hard to come by but work-rate never dropped. A free from Patrick Carey and a fine effort from Paudie Carey had kept our noses in front but by now Ballybacon were threatening and had repositioned the Cummins to the edge of the square. An excellent score from Thomas Maher again showed that they were certainly not going down without a fight and we were feeling the pressure however up stepped Jody Ryan with 2 rallying scores to breathe life into our challenge again. Again though Ballybacon refused to die and when they swept a ball to the net after a long delivery there was only a goal between the side however Paudie Carey worked hard to win possession and flash the ball goal ward, James O’Mahoney made a great save but Shane Fahy was on hand to smash the rebound to the back of the net for the clinching score. We prevailed on a scoreline of 2-18 to 3-09. We await the result of the Golden/Moycarkey match before we will know our fate.
We lined out as follows: Shane Stapleton, Andy O'Brien, Sean Hickey, Willie Mackey, Tom Hickey (0-01), Dinny Stapleton, Emmet Ryan, Patrick Deegan (0-02), Sean Ryan, Matt Feehan, Jody Ryan (0-4), Seamus Carey, Brian Carey (1-1), Paudie Carey (0-1), Patrick Carey(0-9 0-6f)
Subs: Shane Fahy, Jamie O'Toole
