Mayo Gaels were defeated by Parke in the third round of the Michael Walsh League played in a wet and windy Abbey Park on Sunday the 2nd of March.
The Gaels were very unlucky not to have earned a result from what turned out to be a very entertaining contest.
Playing well with the wind in the first half Mayo Gaels created several great scoring opportunities however poor decision making up front meant that the Gaels didn’t reflect their dominance on the scoreboard and as a result both teams were level (0.03 each) approaching half time. The decisive score of the game occurred just before the break when a mix-up in the Gaels defense allowed a long range Parke free to slip into the net (this resulted in an interval score-line of Mayo Gaels 0.04, Parke 1.03).
The Second half was dominated by both defenses and despite their best efforts the Gaels were unable to get the necessary scores to reduce the lead. Overall it was a battling display from an experimental Gaels selection and Tony Byrne, Brian Heneghan, John Sloyne, Fintan Canavan and Kevin Jordan delivered strong performances on the day.
The Senior’s will play Ballycastle in a challenge in Abbey Park next Sunday the 9th of March at 12.00 am.
