Last Wednesday evening Edenderry footballers qualified for the League Semi-Final with a 4-14 to 1-12 win over Cappincur.
Edenderry were very slow to settle and were two points down early in the game. Seanie Moore responded with a good point from a free which was awarded for a foul on Richie Dalton. But Cappincur stretched their lead with a further two points, one from play and one from a free, to go three points in front. Edenderry then levelled when Mark Young finished expertly to the corner of the net, after Shane Connell broke a Colin McCormack kickout to Stephen Murphy, who gave a good pass to Mark Young. Cappincur then went a point in front when they scored a brilliant point from long range. Edenderry then took the lead for the first time in the game when Derek Kelly gave a great pass to Seanie Moore, who coolly rounded the goalie and sent the ball to the net. Derek Kelly then got on the scoresheet when he kicked a good point, before Mark Young grabbed his second and Edenderry’s third goal, after a powerful run through the heart of the Cappincur defence. The Edenderry management then had to make an early change when Stephen Doyle came in for the injured Stuart Cullen. Edenderry’s last two scores of the half came from corner forward Seanie Moore, who kicked one brilliant point from a very tight angle, and the second came from a free which was awarded for a foul on Keith McGuinness. Just before halftime Cappincur scored two points, one from play and one from a free to leave six points between the sides at the break.

Just like the first half Cappincur made the better start, and scored two good points. But Edenderry responded with three very good points, with Keith McGuinness grabbing the first as he fisted the ball over the bar after a pin-point pass from Derek Kelly, while the second and third points came from centre forward Mark Young. Cappincur pulled one back with a point from a free, before Wayne Mooney was introduced for Mark Young. Keith McGuinness scored the next point for Edenderry after great approach play by Bisto Kelly and Stephen Doyle. Edenderry’s next two scores came from two half-backs, when Richie Dalton and Johnny Hurst scored a point apiece after good runs up-field. Derek Kelly then grabbed Edenderry’s fourth goal, when he palmed the ball to the net from a rebound, after his initial shot struck the crossbar. Edenderry then made three substitutions with Padraig Foy, Adrian Forde, and Brendan McCabe coming in for Paul Hanlon, Shane Connell and Keith McGuinness. Cappincur scored the next point, before Edenderry substitute Adrian Forde made a good impact as he scored an excellent point. Edenderry then scored three more points, with two coming from minor star Derek Kelly and one from the experienced Johnny Hurst. Cappincur scored a goal and a point before the end, with the goal coming directly from a free.
Without ever playing really well, once Edenderry settled into the game after the slow start, they were pretty much always in control. Edenderry’s better performers on the day were Stephen Murphy, Richie Dalton, Mark Young, Derek Kelly and Seanie Moore. With a couple of players to come back into contention for the semi final against Doon, and if they up their performance they will have a good chance of reaching the league final.
