UNDER 10 HURLING SEMI FINAL

Edenderry………….3-02

Ferbane/Belmont…..6-02

Last Thursday evening in Durrow, Edenderry’s under 10 hurlers were beaten by Ferbane/Belmont in the Semi Final of the Under 10 Hurling Competition on a scoreline of 6-02 to 3-02. The winning of the game for Ferbane/Belmont came just before the break, when they got in for three goals which proved to be the difference between the sides in the end.

Ferbane/Belmont made the better start of the two teams, and scored a goal and a point early on, to open up a four point lead. Edenderry soon settled, and Shane Cummins brought his side back into the game when he sent the ball to the back of the Ferbane/Belmont net from a free. Edenderry were then on level terms when full forward Donie Groome won possession and sent over a good point. Edenderry soon took the lead when a long ball was sent into their full-forward line, the ball broke to Ciaran Breen who made no mistake as he pulled first time to send the ball past the Ferbane/Belmont goalkeeper. Shane Cummins then scored a point from a free to put his side four points in front. Ferbane/Belmont took over for the remainder of the first half, and scored three unanswered goals, to open up a gap of five points at the break.

Halftime, Edenderry 2-02   Ferbane/Belmont 4-01.

Ferbane opened the scoring in the second half with a goal, but Shane Cummins soon cancelled that score when he sent another shot past the goalie directly from a free. Midway through the second half Ferbane/Belmont had a couple of very good goal chances, to put the game beyond Edenderry’s reach, but Cian Farrell made two wonderful saves in the Edenderry goals to deny them. Ferbane/Belmont then scored a point from a free to extend their lead to six points. Edenderry tried extremely hard to pull back the Ferbane/Belmont lead, but unfortunately they were unable to get more scores. With time just up Ferbane/Belmont scored another goal to seal their victory and qualify for a County Final against Kinnitty.

Despite losing this game, Edenderry can be very proud of their performance, as they put in a great display against a physically stronger Ferbane/Belmont side. This side has shown throughout the year that they are very good hurlers, and that they have the ability to go a step further next year with so many of the team still underage again in 2009. The club would like to thank Martin Keogh, his management and the players for all their hard work throughout the year. Edenderry would like to wish Ferbane/Belmont the best of luck in the final.

SENIOR FOOTBALL RELEGATION PLAY-OFF

Edenderry……1-07

Ferbane………2-06

On Saturday evening in Mucklagh, Edenderry’s Senior footballers lost out to Ferbane by two points, to leave them needing a victory of at least two points against St Rynagh’s in their last relegation match to retain their Senior Status for 2009.

Edenderry made a horrendous start to this game, and allowed Ferbane open up a 2-04 to no score lead after 25 minutes. The first score of the game was a goal to Ferbane, when a long ball was sent into the Edenderry square which was not dealt with, and the ball broke to a Ferbane forward who had a simple task of putting the ball in the back of the net. Ferbane followed that score up with three points, all from frees, before Brian Quinlan made a fine save to deny Ferbane their second goal. But Ferbane were soon on the attack again, and they scored a point and then a goal to open up a 10 point lead. Just before the break Edenderry finally opened their scoring when Robbie Glennon scored an excellent point after a good solo run. Then Cillian Farrell added a second point from a free, which was awarded for a foul on Robbie Glennon.

Halftime, Edenderry 0-02   Ferbane 2-04.

Ferbane grabbed the opening point of the second half, but then Edenderry started to take over soon after the introduction of Mark Young into the forward line. Sean Og Farrell scored Edenderry’s first point of the second half, when he sent the ball over from a tight angle, after good approach play from Richie Dalton. That was soon followed up by a point from Keith McGuinness, when Mark Young played a nice hand pass, after Adrian Murphy had flicked the ball into his path, when he jumped highest in front of the Ferbane goals. Edenderry then got themselves right back into this game when Mark Young made a great run towards the Ferbane goals. He then unselfishly passed the ball to Keith McGuinness, who fired the ball to the back of the Ferbane net to leave four point between the teams. Basil Malone then sent a point over the bar from a free, which was awarded for a foul on Robbie Glennon. Sean Og Farrell then kicked two points to leave the minimum between the teams with time ticking away. Ferbane then scored a very crucial point which gave them a two victory which keeps them Senior again for 2009.

In this relegation group of Edenderry, Ferbane and St Rynagh’s, Ferbane have two points from two games and a scoring difference of +1, St Rynagh’s have two points from one game and a scoring difference of +1, and Edenderry have no points from one game and a scoring difference of -2. This means Edenderry will have to beat St Rynagh’s by at least two points, if they are to retain their position at the top table of Offaly football.

Team: Brian Quinlan, Wayne Mooney, Adrian Murphy, Sean Pender, Johnny Blong, Johnny Hurst, Colm Byrne, Richie Dalton, Adrian Mahon, Basil Malone (0-1), Martin Keogh, Robbie Glennon (0-1), Keith McGuinness (1-1), Sean Og Farrell (0-3), Cillian Farrell (0-1).
Substitutes: Mark Young for Martin Keogh; Colm Cummins for Basil Malone (inj).
Referee: Paul Jordan.
