Galway hurling boss Ger Loughnane has named wing-back David Collins as captain of the Tribesmen. Loughnane has handed the 22-year-old the captain’s armband as he bids to lead Galway to their first All-Ireland title since 1988.
The 2005 Young Hurler of the Year, who can also play in midfield, says he is honoured to be given the captaincy. ‘The most important thing is to concentrate on hurling but it is a big honour,’ said Collins.
‘We have trained hard over the past few months and we are looking forward to getting out on the field.’ Loughnane also picked a left half-back to lead Clare when he took over, and Anthony Daly did not disappoint, leading from the front as the Banner ended their famine with two All-Ireland successes.
His appointment is also seen as a big boost to hurling in Galway city. Collins, an NHL and All-Ireland U-21 medal winner, is the first Liam Mellows clubman to nail down a permanent place on the Galway team since the late Clare native Niall McInerney featured on the Galway team which won the 1980 All-Ireland.
Collins first outing as Galway skipper will be against Antrim in the league at Pearse Stadium on Sunday week.
