ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONS

November 8, 2018

Kilmaine had a big representation at the Community Games finals in Athlone Institute of Technology last weekend.

Emerging champions of Connacht the Kilmaine boys and girls playing on behalf of Mayo took part in three different competitions in Athlone. The U13 girls put up a great performance in the Indoor Soccer competition placing 4th overall. Joesph Murphy won gold in the U16 Art section for the second year in a row with a fantastic drawing while the U15 boys beat a strong Monaghan team to win the Indoor Soccer All-Ireland title.

The U15 lads had a tough final game against Monaghan and a lot of odds stacked against them. They got a great start to the game with a goal from Darragh Doherty in the first couple of minutes. A questionable sending off for David Varley after 6 minutes left the lads with four men for the rest of the game however they defended well and even managed to score two more goals. Monaghan made use of their advantage, scoring three goals to bring the sides level. With the Kilmaine lads stretched in every position and time running out it looked like going to extra time but they kept up an excellent defence and eventually Darragh Doherty drove the ball into the bottom right of the Monaghan goal. They were kept under pressure in the final few minutes but managed to hold out ending the game 4-3 to Mayo (Kilmaine). All of the team received All-Ireland medals after the game.

Playing for the U15 boys: David Varley (Cpt), Darragh Doherty (4 goals), Micheal Hession, Brendan Sheridan, Niall Heneghan, Subs: Tomas Fahy, Andre Fahy, Tomas Lynagh

Well done to all that took part and the great work the management did with the teams. There was great support on the sidelines also which helped the players. See the photo gallery for pictures from the day (Community Games 2010)
