Cobh Wanderers A.F.C. Annual 7-Aside Soccer Blitz
The Cobh Wanderers A.F.C. 7-Aside Soccer blitz was held on Saturday 4th July at the Tech Field. A gloriously sunny day brought 10 teams of 10 players and friends, family members and supporters out for the daylong event.
The day started out with a number of logistical problems for the organisers culminating in a 15 minute delay to the start of the football. Once the football kicked off at 12.15 the day proceeded with usual good natured rivalry between the 10 teams.
The teams were divided into 2 groups of five teams. Matches were 10 minutes aside, no offside, 1 goalkeeper and 6 outfield players. Substitutions were roll on roll off. Referees were Frank O’Neill and Pat Welch who officiated with calm assurance and good nature throughout the day.
Group 1 consisted of Ken Gill, Peter Leahy, Millipore, Wolf Tone and Martin O’Driscoll. This was a very competitive group with Peter Leahy, Millipore and Wolf Tone vying for the 2 places in the semi-finals. With 1 game left between Wolf Tone and Peter Leahy, Peter Leahy needed a draw to proceed to the semi-finals and send the 2007 and 2008 winners, Millipore, home early. Unfortunately for Peter Leahy they lost by 2 goals to 1. Family rivalries emerged in the 2nd last game of the Group with Ken Gill playing Martin O’Driscoll each having players and support from the Stromsoe family. Bragging rights went to Ken Gill.
Group 2 consisted of Mauretania, George McCall, Rob O’Keefe, Ryans and Eddie Nolan. Again the semi-finalists were not confirmed until the final whistle of the final game, Ryans beating George McCall by 3 goals to 2. This meant that Eddie Nolan was knocked out on goal difference.
The semi-finals pairing were Wolf Tone versus George McCall and Ryans versus Millipore.
The Wolf Tone and Ryans proceeded to the final. This was true to form as these 2 teams were the group winners earlier in the day.
After a long day’s soccer the Winners of the Cobh Wanderers A.F.C. Annual 7-Aside Soccer Blitz are Ryan’s Bar. Presentations to the winners and runners-up were made in Jack Doyle’s bar at 8 o’clock where everyone enjoyed a few well deserved pints.
This is the second time that Ryan’s Bar have won the competition, having won it previously in 2006.
