Kildare County 1 Athlone Town 1

Athlone travelled to Station Road to play Kildare County last Saturday. In a match where points were vital for both clubs it was Kildare who took the lead with virtually the last kick of the first half when a cross from ex Athlone Town player Colin Fortune fell to the feet of Philly Gorman who made no mistake from about 3 yards.

Whatever manager Dermot Lennon said to them during the half time interval seemed to work as from the offset the applied constant pressure to a Kildare defence struggling to cope. A free was given in the 65th minute and taking on his captains roll Ian Rossiter bent the ball round the outside of the Kildare wall and the ball nestled in the bottom right hand corner. Immediately after the restart Colm Jinks had a one on one with the keeper and when looking easier to score the ball somehow bounced of the keeper and went just wide of the goal. Chances fell to both sides in the remaining minutes but neither side could break the deadlock.

Next up for Athlone is a home game against league new boys Sporting Fingal managed by ex Athlone boss Liam Buckley on Saturday 17th May. Kick off is 7.30pm. Athlone have continuing injury worries with Ciaran Kelly (shoulder) and Niall Scullion (knee) definitely unavailable. Robbie Hamm (hamstring) who has just resumed light training is rated as very doubtful.

Under 17s – Shamrock Rovers 0 Athlone Town 1

The Athlone Town Under 17s made an early Sunday morning trip to Tallaght to take on Shamrock Rovers. In a tight game it was Athlone who took the lead when Robbie Benson skilfully set up Kevin Boland who brilliantly put the ball in the Rovers net. In the second half Rovers came more into the match and it was backs to the wall stuff for the visitors but they gallantly held on for a superb away win against one of the countries top under 17 teams.
