Under 17s Go Top
Athlone Town 3 Firhouse
Carmel 0
Athlone Town Under 17s produced a brilliant performance to totally out play a gallant Firhouse team in the latest round of matches in the DDSL Major League Division 1. James Craughwell continued his rich vein of goal scoring with a well take goal midway through the first half when a through ball from Kevin Dunne was taken on the edge of the box and James kept his nerve and slid the ball past the advancing Firhouse keeper. The score remained that way until the half time break.
In the second half Athlone scored two superb goals. The one from James Craughwell was taken again from a Kevin Dunne through ball and hit with power from the edge of the box and went in of the underneath of the crossbar. Robbie Benson’s who had just returned from International duty was pure brilliance. He took the ball on his chest controlled the ball well turned and volleyed the ball in to the back of the net from the edge of the box.
Athlone now top the division at the time of going to press with 34 points 3 ahead of Drogheda United who have 6 games in hand but in football you are better of having points on the board that games in hand and many teams have found that to be the case.
