Athlone Town FC Notes

Longford Town 3  Athlone Town 0

Athlone Town travelled to Flancare Park on Saturday and returned home on the wrong end of a 3 – 0 scoreline.  In a game of very few chances it was Longford who had luck on their side when ex Athlone player Like Hardy struck a ball just outside the area which deflected of Colm Jinks and then onto the foot of Robbie Hamm before looping over Town keeper Anthony Jinks into the net.  Next chance again came Longford’s way when a cross in from the left again hit off Colm Jinks and rebounded into the net to give the home side a 2 – 0 lead.

Despite luck not being on their side Athlone continued to battle hard and had 3 good goal scoring chances two of which fell to Colm Jinks and the final one to Noel McGee who from 5 yards with the keeper to beat couldn’t control the high bouncing ball and ballooned the ball over the bar.  In the final minute with Athlone pushing all players forward Longford broke away and the subsequent pass across the box from Darren McKenna split the Town defence gave yet another ex Athlone player Davoren the easiest of tap ins from one yard.

Next up for Athlone is a trip to Station Road on Friday 9th May where they will take on Kildare County.  Kick off is 7.45pm.  Athlone have continuing injury worries with Ciaran Kelly (shoulder), Claudio Nardone (ankle), and Niall Scullion (knee) all definitely unavailable. Robbie Hamm (hamstring) is rated as very doubtful.
