Athlone Town FC Notes

Monaghan United 1 Athlone Town 2

Athlone travelled to Monaghan last Friday night in search of their first points on the road. The first half was a tame affair with neither side creating any clear cut chances. It was in the second half that the match really came to life.

Just 5 minutes into the half a cross from the right was met by the head of Colm Jinks whose glancing header rebounded of the legs of the Monaghan defender and the ball trickled over the goal line to give Town the lead.

Monaghan replied almost immediately when from a Ciaran Kelly goal kick the ball was returned up the right side of the pitch and a perfect cross was met by the foot of Northern Ireland Under 21 international Darren Meehan who drilled the ball home from 6 yards giving the Athlone keeper no chance.

After this setback it was all Athlone with Eric Lavine trying a 35 yard shot only to see it lobbing over the Monaghan keeper and the ball then hitting the crossbar. It wasn’t long though before Town took the lead again. A cross from Colm Jinks was headed into the path of an inrushing Ian Rossiter who volleyed home from 10 yards.

Athlone contained Monaghan after that and took a well deserved 3 points and now look forward to home games against Limerick and Kildare over the coming week.

Next Match

Athlone Town have two matches at home during the coming week. On Saturday 12th April they play host to Mike Kerley’s Limerick 37 with kick off at 7.30pm and on Tuesday 15th April they play host to Kildare County in the rearranged match that was postponed due to the weather. Kick off for this one is 7.45pm.

Manager Dermot Lennon has selection worries to cope with as Des Hope (knee strain) and Nigel Keady (hamstring) both picked injuries in the recent victory against Monaghan United. Jim Sheridan will also be unavailable for the next 4 weeks as he is getting married on Friday 11th April in Sligo.

Under 17s

St Pauls 1 Athlone Town 1

Athlone town travelled to Artane, Dublin to take on an ever improving St Pauls team. Manager Anthony Sherlock had to plan without Robbie Benson who was away on international duty with the Irish Under 16s this week.

Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half Athlone failed to make the most of the conditions and went into the dressing room at half time 0 – 0.

In the second half St Pauls adjusted better to the wind and went 1 – 0 up. Despite this Athlone came back into the game when a super run by Kevin Horan down the left enabled him to cross in a superb ball and James Sherlock was on hand to put the ball in over the line. Other chances followed with Kevin Dunne and Jay Deane failing to take chances.

At the end of the day it was a fair result but one that Athlone could have taken the 3 points from. Athlone now stand second in the league to Drogheda United who have a few games in hand.

Athlone are at home Sunday 13th April against Firhouse Carmel. Kick off in Athlone Town Stadium is 11am.

Congratulations to Buccaneers RFC from everyone at Athlone Town FC on becoming AIB League Division 2 champions and gaining promotion back to the top division at their first attempt.
