Football U16: U16 commenced their football championship with a hard fought victory over Shannon Rovers in Ballinderry last Monday evening.   Despite losing centre back, Brian Connolly to a wrist injury after five minutes, Ballina had the better of the first half and went four point up at half time, 0/5 to 0/1 scores from Ben King [0-3, 1 free] and scores from Patrick O’ Donovan and David Kelly.  The early part of  the second half continued in a similar pattern as Ballina extended their lead by seven points with scores from Ben King, Liam Mc Grattan and Terry O ‘Halloran but Rovers rallied and a considerable period of dominance delivered two goals leaving the game finely balanced going into the last five minutes with just a point between the teams.  After a series of near misses by Rovers and some serious defending by the Ballina rearguard, the ball was worked up the field for Liam Mc Grattan to tap over a relieving point, after which Ballina regained the upper hand and held for a two point win 0/9 to 2/1. They now play Silvermines on April 8th at home at 6-30pm.
