Bride Rovers G.A.A. Club notes for the week.

All Ireland Football Final

Cork footballers are going in search of a unique Senior/Minor double in Croke Park on Sunday. The Seniors take on Down while the Minors are in action against Tyrone. We wish both teams every success as they strive to bring the Sam Maguire and Tom Markham Trophies back to Leeside. County P.R.O. Gerard Lane is the Liaison Officer for the Cork Senior Football team and the past few weeks have been crazy for Gerard, but he is able to take it all in his stride. Daniel Lane is also involved in Conor Counihan’s backroom team so hopefully they can be part f the group that bring Cork their seventh All Ireland Senior Football title. For our own club officers the last week or so has been hectic. It’s been like the division of the loaves and fishes as regards tickets. Our allocation of tickets for Sunday is 42 and with over twice that many members seeking tem, they’re phones have been busy. So all those who are travelling to the capital for the weekend, safe driving and ‘come on Cork’.

Club Shop

I know Halloween hasn’t come yet but its only fourteen weeks to Christmas! This year we hope to be able to satisfy all club members, supporters and parents of juveniles who wish to purchase Club Gear for the Christmas season. To do t his it is essential that we have all the orders in, in plenty of time. We have a large range of gear in stock in the Club Shop but other items may have to be ordered and it takes five to six weeks to get orders filled. Anyone who wants to place an order is asked to contact either Kathleen at (086) 3807784 or Betty at (086) 1540902 as soon as possible.

Junior Football League (Division 2)

We were to have had a Division 2 Hurling game at home against Aghada on last Friday night Sept. 10th at 6.30. As Aghada were unable to make the venue for 6.30 the game was postponed. Instead we travelled to Rostellan on Sunday morning to play the home side in a Division 2 Junior Football League game. We are still in contention in this competition so collecting two league points was vital. The team we fielded featured some of the players who took part in our short 3 game ‘A’ grade Junior Football Championship campaign in March and April as well as Junior ‘B’ players. Michael ‘Twiggy’ Collins lined our in goals and used his height and agility to good effect. Billy Lynch, James Murphy and Mark O’Connell were the bedrock of the defence. The half back line was Kieran Woulfe (former Passage West star), Stephen Pratt and Club Chairman, Mike Carey. At midfield Liam Forde and Mike Kearney lorded it. Our half forward line was Damien Buckley, Conor McElvaney (former Sean McDermotts, Co. Monaghan player) and Stephen Boyce. Our full forward line was Jason Pratt, Brendan Walsh and John O’Dowd. In August 1983 at Caherlag in Round two of the Junior ‘A’ grade football championship we played Carrigtwohill. This was the clubs second team, our ‘A’ grade team had been beaten 3-16 to 1-12 in Cobh in July. In that ‘B’ grade game 27 years ago in Caherlag we were well beaten by Carrigtwohill and a juvenile player, Dermot Johnson, came on as a sub that day. On Sunday last – nearly three decades later, ‘George’ Johnson was till on football duty for the Rovers when he came on as a half time sub – what a servant to the club.

John O’Dowd had our first point. Liam, Billy and Brendan Walsh (from a ’45) added points before Stephen Boyce got a great goal. Brendan Walsh added two more points to put us 1-6 to 0-2 ahead at the break. A great kick out early in the second half from Michael Collins was taken on by Michael Kearney who gave a peach of a pass to Conor and the Monaghan man hit a brilliant goal. Aghada kicked over 4 points to leave it 2-8 to 0-6 with a few minutes left. Then Aghada’s Declan Kearney (his father of the same name captained the Rovers to the East Cork Junior Hurling League title in 1982) got through to finally beat Michael Collins for a good goal. This left the final score at 2-8 to 1-6. Well done to all the players who took part in the game.
