Bride Rovers G.A.A. Club Notes For The Week...

November 8, 2018

‘B’ Grade Football on Saturday

On next Saturday February 13th the long awaited 2009 Junior ‘B’ Grade Football Championship Final takes place. This game versus Russell Rovers is fixed for Castlelyons at 3.30pm. The playing of this game has been a long drawn out saga since last November, so hopefully a conclusion will be arrived at on Saturday evening. We’ve played three games to get to the East Cork Final, defeating Youghal, St Catherines and Aghada. Our junior ‘A’ grade football team went out of the East Cork Championship in the second round in 2009. This meant we had a very strong panel of players available for the ‘B’ grade championship. Our opponents Russell Rovers will, of course, be fielding their first team so they will be favourites to lift the title. However, in our three games in the competition last autumn, our lads gave great displays. Its seventeen years since we last won this title, that was back in 1993 when we defeated Glanmire in the final in Glenville. It would be a great start to our new season to capture the ?? Coleman Cup. Go for it lads.

Our paths to the final has been as follows

Bride Rovers 4-8   Youghal 2-7

Bride Rovers 3-5   St Catherines 0-8

Bride Rovers 2-9   Aghada 1-7

This will be our fifth East Cork Junior ‘B’ Football final, we’ve won two and lost two to date:

1981 Bride Rovers 1-10   Youghal 0-4

1989 Bride Rovers 1-6     Aghada 1-7

1993 Bride Rovers 1-8    Glanmire 1-4

2008 Bride Rovers 0-6    Carrignavar 1-4

Scór Success

The County Scór semi final involving Imokilly, Avondhu and Carrigdhoun Divisions was held in Lisgoold on Sunday night last. We were dually involved in the Tráth na gCeist and Nuachleas. In the Question Time we were just pipped into third place with the honours going to Ballyhooley and Ballygiblin from the North Cork Division. In the Novelty Act it was like a re-run of the East Cork Final. Cloyne and ourselves were the only participants so we’ve both qualified for the County Final. This will be held in the Éire Óg GAA pavilion in Ovens on Sunday week February 21st. The East Cork final of the Scór na bPáistí competition will take place in Watergrasshill Community Centre on Sunday next February 14th commencing at 2 o’clock. The Bride Rovers Club has contestants in the Figure Dancing and Novelty Act and we wish them all the very best in their quest for Divisional honours.

Davis v Taylor

Well the countdown is really on for the big Steve Davis v Dennis Taylor showdown. The two snooker heavyweights come face to face in the SG1 Club in Fermoy on Monday week February 22nd. It promises to be a gala occasion as two of the games great characters come face to face. Even for those with little or no interest in snooker, this exhibition game provides the opportunity to see two world class sportsmen up close. Tickets which will be limited, can be had by contacting (087) 9808973, (087) 6893829 and (086) 8350741. A special programme will be produced for the night and advertising space is also available on the publication.

Fogged Off

There was major disappointment, not alone in Fermoy, but all over the district when heavy fog last Saturday meant the Cork v Clare Senior Hurling game could not go ahead. The game was to have marked the ‘turn on’ of the new floodlight in Fitzgerald Park in Fermoy. The term ‘Foggy Saturday’ will probably be used in years to come to describe last Saturday night. Back on Sunday May 6th 1934 two inter county senior hurling games were played in Fermoy. Waterford beat Tipperary and Cork defeated Limerick in two tournament games. Thousands had been expected for the double header. In anticipation of a huge crowd, literally thousands of ham sandwiches had been made. Torrential rain kept the crowds down. The games went ahead but the many uneaten ham sandwiches left uneaten, caused the first Sunday of May in 1934 to be dubbed ‘Ham Sunday’. Luckily both Cork and Clare have agreed to a re-fixture of the game on Wednesday March 10th.
