Senior Championship on Saturday Evening
Its Senior Hurling Championship time once more. On Saturday evening next, June 5th, we face familiar foes St Finbarrs in the first round of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship in Pairc Uí Chaoimh. Since our elevation to Senior ranks in 2004 we’ve met the Barrs on three occasions and Saturday’s encounter will be the fourth meeting of the clubs. In 2006 and 2007 we defeated the Togher side. In 2008 however, they got their revenge when they won by a margin of two points. For next Saturday’s clash the Barrs will be hot favourites. Unlike us, they are enjoying a good Senior League campaign with 5 wins to date – we have had only one victory. As well as that, we have a few serious injury doubts and at this level of club hurling, we need every player to be fully fit. People say that the first rounds of the championship are now non-events – on account of the ‘back door’ system. The simple fact of the matter is that a win in the first round guarantees Senior status for 2011 and guarantees at least another six weeks involvement in the championship. Previous encounters will matter little on Saturday evening but we can be certain that it will take a top class display to defeat St Finbarrs. Our form this season to date has been very mixed. However a lot of work has gone into the preparations of the team and the training schedule has been very thorough. Go for it lads, ye know ye can do it. A word to all our supporters – this game was fixed for 6.45 with the Glen Rovers v Na Piarsaigh game at 8pm but both games have been brought forward by fifteen minutes so our game now commence4s at 6.30 in Pairc Uí Chaoimh.
How can one describe this contest? Cork were cast in the role of no-hopers, but players just there to make up the numbers for a Tipp team favoured to topple Kilkenny. From the thrown in the script was torn up and
