Saturday, October 9th.

Bride Rovers 1-3               St Colmans 1-4

Bride Rovers U12 Ladies Football competitive season finished in disappointing fashion on Saturday, October 9th at Rover main pitch when we were defeated by a single point in the U12 East Cork final. Rovers beat the same opposition narrowly in a league final a few weeks so we knew beforehand that the sides were fairly evenly matched and so this proved on the day.

We had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half and this definitely presented us with the majority of the scoring chances. Unfortunately, we kicked a good number of wides but to be fair to the girls, the strong wind made any point-taking extremely difficult and this also affected St Colmans in the second half. In the conditions, scores were few and far between and despite a few misses, we led 1-2 (a Grace Culloty goal and points from Laura Quirke and Vivienne Cowman) to 0-1 coming up to half-time. St Colmans then struck for a goal which ultimately proved crucial and we turned around to face the wind with only a  slender 1 point lead.

Our goalkeeper, Madison Parle, and backs (Maria O Sullivan, Niamh Murphy, Sarah O Flynn, Aoife Howard, Aoife Deasy and Grainne Noonan) rose to the challenge and excelled in this second half and limited the opposition scores to 0-3. However, we could only muster one point from Grace Culloty ourselves and we were just touched off. Captain, Emma Roche and Sophie Merry worked hard around the middle of the field but scoring opportunities for our forwards were limited against the strong wind.

As it turned out on the day, St Colmans were marginally better at taking the chances presented and congratulations to them on their victory. Commiserations to the Rovers girls who gave everything in training and on the pitch and I’m certain they will bounce back from this to enjoy success again in the future. This was a very successful year and much thanks to fellow trainers Mossie O Sullivan, Emma O Keeffe, Breda Noonan, Irene Hogan and John A Murphy . Our large panel of players played in very many games, both friendlies and competitive matches, won more than our fair share and we have the league plate win to celebrate.
