Bride Rovers Ladies Football & Camogie Club notes for the week.

East Cork U12 Ladies Football Plate Final.

Bride Rovers 3-5               St. Colemans 2-5.

Bride Rovers earned a hard-fought win in the final of the U12 East Cork Plate competition on Sunday, Sep 12 at Carrigtwohill. Other than a breeze blowing from the western end of the ground, conditions were otherwise perfect and this contributed to an excellent contest.

Rovers started slowly and found themselves a goal down very early in the game after Colemans attacked down their right wing. However, we did have the advantage of the wind and a point and a goal from Grace Culloty helped us to settle. Another goal followed from Laura Quirke  and further scores from captain Emma Roche (point) and Emma Hazelwood (an excellent goal toe-poked past the advancing keeper) seemed to set us on our way. While we enjoyed a healthy lead at this point St Colemans were extremely competitive in general play and no-one was writing them off at half time, especially when they answered Rovers final score of the half (a point from Grace Culloty) with an immediate point of their own. The half-time scoreline of 3-3 to 1-1 told one story but the effort which was required from the Rovers half backs (Grainne Noonan, Sarah O Flynn and Aoife Deasy) and full-backs (Aoife Howard, Niamh Murphy and Maria O Sullivan) told another. Furthermore, Rovers missed a couple of chances which could have proved costly on another day.

St Colmans had wind advantage in the second half and got the perfect start with an early goal to bring them back into it. Their tackling was teak-tough throughout and we found it difficult to break them down as we had in the first half with our only second half scores being two priceless points from Laura Quirke. We had other chances, and has another goal disallowed for what appeared to be a square ball offence, but didn’t avail of them. Colemans whittled away at our lead scoring four more points but crucially we denied them further goals which was the winning of the game in the end. This was down in no small part to goalkeeper Madison Parle who again showed her worth as an excellent keeper and made several fine saves and interventions.

Finally congratulations to both teams on a great game and particularly to the Rovers who were completing a double after the U11 East Cork camogie final win the previous day.
