JUNIOR CAMOGIE TEAM THROUGH TO LEAGUE SEMI FINAL

On Monday 4th July, we played Ballinascarthy in a league game. They beat us in last year’s

Championship semi final, so we knew we’d be facing a tough match. Conditions in Ballinascarthy were very unsuitable, with very strong wind and rain throughout the match. We played against the wind in the first half and found it difficult to clear the ball out of our defence on several occassions. As a result, our defence were under a great deal of preasure for the duration of the first half. Our defence was outstanding at putting their forwards under pressure and in doing so, Ballinascarthy shot a lot of wides. However, Ballinascarthy scored a goal and a point from play and three points from frees. The score at half time was 1.4 to 0.0 in Ballinascarthy’s favour.

In the second half, we rearranged our team to suit playing with the wind. Ballinascarthy found it difficult to clear their lines and we as a team began to play much better. We began to win more ball around the middle of the field and our forwards began creating more scoring chances. We opened the scoring from a 30m free and with buliding confidence, we began to show more dominance in all areas of the field. Two further points from Sinead Walsh and a superb goal by Chloe O’ Flynn brought us to within one point of the home side. Further points from Sinead o’ Driscoll, Sinead Walsh and Andrea O’ Flynn meant that we had a two point lead with about 5minutes to go. Our half back line and midfield stopped everything that went into them and cleared every ball down the field. In the last few imnutes of the game, Ballinascarthy threw everything at us and the ball was inside our 21 yard line for a long time. Great blocking and hooking disallowed Ballinascarthy to penetrate our defence until the final whistle was blown. Due to this outstanding performance by all players, we are now in the league semi final. We play Cobh on the 15th July at a venue and time to be decided.
