Busy championship weekend for Fr. Murphy's

November 7, 2018

Last weekend was a busy one for Fr. Murphy’s Camogie and Ladies Football Club, with games in both senior camogie and football championship. Saturday saw the second round of the camogie championship where Fr. Murphy’s hoped to build on their opening round defeat at the hands of Bros. Pearse.

They faced Tara for the fourth time this year. Fr. Murphy’s had come out on top on the first two occasions – the final of the Birmingham International Festival and the final of the Tara CC 7-a-side tournament – whereas Tara beat a 12 woman Fr. Murphy’s team in the opening round of the Senior League.

Tara got on the score sheet first but Grainne Hunter equalised almost immediately for Fr. Murphy’s. Tara seemed to find their stride the quickest and had some good play in the first half, getting some fine scores to leave Fr. Murphy’s trailing by 4 points at half time.

Fr. Murphy’s came out fighting at the start of the second half, however, and fought hard to pull back a few good scores. Although Tara kept up the pressure, late goals from Sue Harding and Sinead Kirk kept Fr. Murphy’s in touch. The game finished with a victory for Tara on a scoreline of 2-08 to Fr. Murphy’s 3-03.

Although this is Fr. Murphy’s second defeat in the group stages of the senior championship, the girls can take much from their performance. Next up is Croydon on 20th June in the final group game.

Sunday saw the football championship kick off and Fr. Murphy’s faced newly promoted Holloway Gaels. The 2007 and 2008 champions lined out with only 13 players but put in a spirited performance to win on a score line of 5-15 to 1-04. A great start to the football championship for the girls in purple and gold!
