The annual Tom Tierney Memorial Cup took place as a curtain raiser to the Exiles Cup final on Sunday, May 9th and saw a treffic fight back from the home side Carras to snatch victory over Milltown, played at Minor level, on a final scoreline of 2-11 to 1-10.
Milltown were well ahead with just 15 minutes remaining but it was a beautifully taken goal by Colin Hughes that began the comeback for Carras and this laid the foundation for a second goal, drilled home by Joseph Cooper that sent his side in front with just two minutes remaining and eventually held out for a four point win. Milltown were left shocked at the end and the fact they only managed two points in the second half came back to haunt them.
Afterwards, Tomas Tierney, son of the late Tom presented the winning trophies to the Carras team while a hero of the past, Ollie Killeen, was a special guest who presented the trophies to the runners up of Milltown. Ollie was a former team mate that played along with Tom Tierney on the great Carras Minor team of 1959 that were honoured prior to Christmas on the 50th anniversary of that special occasion. Carras GAA Club would like to thank all involved who helped out in the organising of this event which runs off very well each year and especially Carras Chairman Johnny Golden who puts in a great deal of work in the organising of this event each year.
