Club History

In 2011 the club celebrated 125 years in existance.  To mark this momentous occaision, the club launched a DVD covering the year 2011, with highlights of matches from the 1980’s and interviews with past and present players.  A book was also launch detailing the history of the club from the 2000’s.  This book picks up where the previous book detailing the history of the club ended.  The DVD cost €20 and the book cost €20 and special offer for 2 books covering the club over it’s entire history costing €25.  These are now on sale from any club officer.

A brief History – Kildysart GAA club was founded in 1886, just a few years after the GAA itself was formed. While the clubs main activity has been the playing of gaelic football, it has been involved in a wide variety of activities over the years.

In gaelic football, the club has been relatively successful, winning at least one championship in almost every decade since the 1930’s. Indeed Kildysart won the county senior football championship in 1889, the clubs only senior title to date. In 1939, Kildysart won the county Junior Championship.

The clubs next major success was in 1945, when the Junior Championship was won. Kildysart beat Scariff by 1-5 to 0-3 in the final at Ennis. The Junior Championship was won again in 1948, 1950 and 1953. In the late 1950’s the club had success at underage level, winning a Juvenile Championship in 1957 and a Minor Championship in 1959. Kildysart became County Junior Champions again in 1961, and also won the title in 1966. In 1967, the club went on step further and won the Clare Intermediate Championship, beating Coolmeen in the final.

In the 1980’s the club had a very successful period, starting with Clare under-21 B Championship victory in 1983. The following year the Junior Championship was won at the expense of Naomh Eoin in the GAA’s Centenary year. In 1986, Kildysart had its most famous victory in recent times, when Coolmeen was defeated on a scoreline of4-4 to 1-7 in the Intermediate final.

In the 1990’s, Kildysart won the Intermediate League on three occasions. In 1995, a Kildysart/Clondegad team won the County Under-17 title, and Kildysart won the Under 21 C Championship. Intermediate & Junior titles were also won in the ’00’s. Its just the beginning ……….
