HERBIE SHEKLETON
For well over 50 years Herbie was involved in the club. From Underage training to being an extremely active member of the committee and not to mention being one of the Senior team’s most fervent supporters down through the decades. Manys an opposition player got an immediate welcome as they ran onto the pitch through Herbie’s gate over the years…..
At the last AGM, Herbie was elected as the Honorary President of the Club, and therefore like all true greats, he signed off from the very top. His presence at matches and committee meeting has been sorely missed over the past year or two and will continue to be so in the future.
There is no doubt that the premium level seats in Heaven for this year’s Championship have got another worthy season-ticket holder R.I.P. Herbie Shekleton – Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.
SENIORS & JUNIORS
The Seniors played their second, of three consecutive away matches at the weekend with a trip to Redhills on Saturday evening and suffered their second defeat of the season losing 0-11 to 1-7.
A tight first half saw scores at a premium and we lead 0-4 to 0-3 at halftime with Darragh Gunne showing up very well but we failed to translate our chances into scores. Following a few early 2nd half substitutes, the Stars looked to have kicked on when three super long-range points from Mark McKeown, Philly Tinnelly and Barry Tully stretched our lead to 0-7 to 0-4.
However, the expected push never materialised and Redhills dominated the remainder of the match and were 0-11 to 0-7 ahead before Colm Smith got a touch to a high ball and found the net, as Redhills pleaded for a squareball. It mattered little as the referee blew the final whistle from the resulting kickout and the home side celebrated a deserved win.
Next up is another roadtrip when they head to Gowna on Wed night for the re-arranged league match @ 8pm. After that, thankfully a home match is due, and it’s a double header against Lacken on Sat 21st, with the Juniors starting things of at 6pm and the Seniors on directly after. The following weekend, sees another double header, this time away to Lavey on Sunday (29th) afternoon.
UNDERAGE
The O’Raghallaigh Gaels U-16’s tough season continued during the week with a 2-12 to 0-9 defeat at home to Bailieboro on Tuesday evening. Their league season finishes on Tuesday 17th in Shercock when they host Crosserlough. Having opened the campaign with a victory, they will hopefully bookend it with another one.
The 14s are also enduring a tough old time of things and they came out the wrong side of a 1-9 to 1-1 score line at home to Castlerahan last week. That completed the group stages of the League but the lads may yet be involved in the Sheild section but I’ve no details of that yet.
The 12s are enjoying a better run and kept that going with a 4-10 to 3-6 victory at home to Cuchullainns last week. They face the short trip to Bailieboro tonight (16th) before finishing of the group section with a home match against Knockbride the following Monday. The whole U-12 finals will complete with a big tournament in Breffni over the June Bank Holiday.
The 10s are really getting up and running with plenty of challenge matches lined up over the next few weeks. They played Killany last Thursday (12th) down the Park, and also have challenges at home on the 19th and 26th. They then head to Newry for their annual blitz on the Sat 29th May.
Not forgetting the girls, the U-14’s are playing in the Div 3League Semi Final on Tuesday at home to St. Finbarrs @ 7.30pm.
HURLING
Dont forget, juvenile hurling continues down the park every Saturday 5-6pm. New players aged up to 10 are very welcome. Games in early June for them in conjunction with East Cavan Gaels Hurling Club. For any further details, just contact Willie Gaughan on 086 164 9280
