KILFLYNN CANCER SUPPORT GROUP TABLE QUIZ & BEARD SHAVE 2011
The Kilflynn Cancer Support Group are presently organising their eighth annual Table Quiz in aid of Cancer services in Kerry and Cork. The quiz will be held in Parker’s Pub and Herbert’s Bar Kilflynn, on Wednesday December 28th at 9.00 p.m. The group was originally set up by Fr. Pat O’Donnell in 2004. Pat is a cancer survivor and came up with the idea of holding a fundraising quiz in Kilflynn at Christmas time. Even though cancer affects every household in some way, we all know either family members or friends who are or have been sufferers; the support for this fundraiser exceeded all expectations. The success of the first quiz ensured that it would become an annual event. As well as being a great fundraiser it has now turned into a great social occasion each Christmas with the same faces returning each year. It is wonderful to see those who live away from Kilflynn supporting the quiz with their families at a time of year which is all about spending time together and giving and sharing. Even though Fr. Pat moved on to new pastures, in Milltown, a few years back he always returns for the occasion and everyone feels it wouldn’t be the same without him.
This year we are auctioning a signed Kilkenny hurling jersey, signed by all the members of possibly the greatest hurling team of all time, a real collector’s item. We are also auctioning a beautiful painting by Annette Nolan, local artist and mother of Kerry’s hurler, Shane. Jimmy Deenihan’s signed book, My Sporting Life.
There are also some beautiful soft toys and other items which we hope to sell on the night. We would be grateful to receive any unwanted Christmas presents so that we could auction them on the night; all donations can be handed in to Parker’s Pub, Herbert’s Bar and shop or John O’Flaherty.
This year as an added bonus we are also holding a sponsored beard shave on the night. Local lads Shane McKenna, Graham Harris, Robert Brennan and Tommy Neenan have avoided the razors for the past six weeks and will be on for a big shave on the night. Sponsorship cards are available in the local pubs and shops and from those involved and every euro would be welcome.
Our small community has made a substantial contribution in providing added care to cancer patients and their families and to date has raised over €42,000. Last year the proceeds were divided between Recovery Haven, Tralee, the oncology unit at Cork University Hospital, Kerry Hospice and Kerry Cancer Support.
