Good Win for Junior B Footballers.

Our Junior B Grade Football team played the first round of the East Cork Championship last week. Under lights at Cobh on Tuesday night we played Youghal. We were expecting a tough game from the Seasiders who were regraded from Junior A this year. We had a dream start scoring 4 goals and 2 points in the first twenty minutes to leave Youghal shell shocked. This was the best performance of the year from the team. In fairness we fielded a strong team, as did Youghal. Having built up a big lead we defended well for the remainder of the game, adding just six more points to our tally to win by a margin of seven points, 4  – 8 to  2 –7. This was a very good win but tougher challenges face us in the next round. In round two we will be meeting St. Catherines – this is the Saints first team so it will be a difficult encounter.

Team V Youghal; Daniel O Brien, Pat Barry, Alan Broderick, Trevor Moloney,  Padraig O Brien, Barry Murphy, Tomas Kearney, Sean Ryan, Barry Johnson, Donal Ryan, Padraig Murphy, Jason Mannix, Billy Lynch, Brian Murphy, Jason Pratt.

Subs; Declan Quinlan, Niall Hogan, James O Sullivan, Barry Hazlewood, James Bermingham.

Under 21 Hurlers in action on Saturday.

It’s back to Championship action for our u21 hurling team on next Saturday.

Having had a lucky escape in the first against Russell Rovers in Ballynoe when we got a draw there was a big improvement in the replay. In Lisgoold two weeks ago the lads hurled very well and earned a good victory. Fr. O Neills provide the opposition on this Saturday in the semi-final having spent a year at the u21 A Grade last year. The Ballymacoda/Ladysbridge side are a talented team based around very good Minor A and Premier teams of recent years. Several of their team were on their Intermediate team this year so they have plenty of big match experience. If we can reproduce the hurling played in the first half of the replay against Russell Rovers we will be in with a shout but there’s no doubt O Neills are a much better side than any team we’ve met this year. At the time of writing the venue and time of the game are not finalised but we want plenty vocal support on the day. Go for it lads.

County Final on Sunday.

This time last year the whole parish was eagerly awaiting our first ever County Senior Hurling Final. We went down to Sars by a single point and next Sunday Sars go out v Newtownshandrum in a bid to keep their County Title.

2009/2010 Cork GAA members Draw.

The Cork GAA Members draw for 2009/2010 will commence at the end of October when the Monthly Draws for September and October will be held. There is a huge Prize Fund for the draw with cars, holidays, a house and numerous cash prizes. It costs just €10 a month to join the draw or €100 for the year. Each GAA Club in the County benefits greatly from this Draw as a large portion of the money comes back to the individual Clubs. The Bride Rovers Club is now selling tickets for the new Draw. Club Officers and Members have tickets on sale and as this Draw provides much needed finance your support is needed and appreciated.

Bon Voyage.

All in the Club and Parish will join in wishing Fr. Seanie Barry  Bon Voyage as he journeyed back to Nairobi in Kenya during the week. He was home in Ireland for little over a month during which time he attended many Club and Inter County Games. We hope he enjoyed his time at home and goes back to Africa renewed and refreshed for his Missionary Work.

Books, Books, Books.

I suppose it’s because this is the GAA’s 125th Anniversary but there seems to an unprecedented number of GAA related books coming out at present so there will be no shortage of reading material for Gaelic games fans.  Brian Cody and Mickey Harte arguably the two top managers of this Century have both put pen to paper. A year with John Kiely’s Waterford Football team was launched in Dungarvan last Wednesday night and anyone who wants to see the real meaning of passion and ‘for the love of the game’ should read this great book. On Tuesday week Oct 20th  the GAA President will launch the first volume of the GAA Oral History Project in Nemo Rangers Pavilion. On Friday November 6th Bob Honohan’s History of Mitchelstown GAA will be launched.
