Bride Rovers GAA Club Notes.

Junior B Footballers win Semi Final.

Our Junior B Football team have qualified for the East Cork Championship Final for the second year in a row. On last Saturday the semi final  V Aghada was down for decision. The game was fixed for Cobh but as that venue was unplayable a toss of a coin decreed that we had to travel to Rostellan to take on the home team. We faced a gale in the opening half but still managed to get the first two points. After that good start we were under severe defensive pressure and were lucky to be just four pints adrift at the break 1   4  to 0   3 behind. With the elements in the second half we came more into the game. Two goals, one each  from Barry Johnson(penalty) and Donal Ryan helped our cause greatly. Our backs still came under pressure but they coped admirably with what came their way.  Playing some very good football we got well on top and won by   2  9 to  1   7.

Team and scorers. Daniel O Brien, Pat Barry, Trevor Moloney, Alan Broderick, Padraig O Brien, Barry Murphy, Tomas Kearney 0-1, Barry Johnson  1-2, Sean Ryan 0-2, Jason Mannix 0-3, Michael Collins, Brian Murphy, Jason Pratt, Donal Ryan 1-0, Padraig Murphy 0-1.  Sub Vincent O Keeffe, also on the panel were Barry Hazlewood, Niall Hogan Billy Lynch, John Kearney, Kevin O Keeffe, Declan Quinlan, Shane Murphy, James Bermingham, James O Sullivan and Stephen Boyce.

Our final opponents will be Russell Rovers who earlier this year reached the County Junior B Football Final. We thought the final was scheduled for this weekend but it seems now that it will not be going ahead as planned, though we’ve given the ECB and our opponents a choice of ten dates to play the game.

This will be our fourth Junior B Football Final, we’ve won 2 and lost 2.

1981;   Bride Rovers 1-10 Youghal 0-4. capt. Tom Kearney.

1989;  Aghada  1- 7 Bride Rovers 1 –6, capt Tom Mulcahy.

1993;  Bride Rovers 1-8 Glanmire 1- 4, capt, John Joe Barry.

2008; Carrignavar  1-4 Bride Rovers 0 6, capt, Padraig O Brien.

Well done to all the players for reaching this final and also to Selectors Vincent Cronin, Shane O Connor and Tom Kearney.

Minor Hurlers Win.

We were very disappointed earlier this year when we exited the 12 a side Minor Hurling championship losing top Sars and drawing with Cobh.  Cobh went on to win out the competition in East Cork and then romped through the County to win the Cork title at their ease.  Bearing in mind the results of the summer we were in no way over confident travelling to Riverstown on Wednesday night of last week to face the home team, Sars in a game to decide who’d contest the County League.

After Maurice Dooley made a great save in the first minute Sars got in for a goal followed by a point. Points from Daniel Lane from a free and from play got us right into the game. Sars then hit over two more points before we hit a purple patch. Eoin Murphy and Daniel Lane(free) doubled our tally before we scored two goals. A great drive from Eoin Murphy resulted in a cracker of a goal followed almost straight away by a similar score from Jason Pratt. These scores put us 2 4  to  1  3 ahead. Then Gerard Healy took the game by the scruff of the neck. Giving a four star display Ger scored 2  4, his scores coming at either side of half time. This meant that with ten minutes to go we were ahead by 4 8 to 2  7. Sars attacked repeatedly but John Kearney and Micheál Howard and team Captain William O Leary defended stoutly. We added two more points from Ger and Jason to win by 4 10 to 2 7. It may have been the last week of October and conditions were difficult but each and every one of the thirteen who played gave their all for the Green, White and Gold Jersey. Well done lads. Amazingly ‘tis often in ‘minor’ games like this that we see the best of the game of hurling. We now go on to the County League which was to be finalise at the meeting of the Cork County Minor Board last Tuesday night.

Team and scorers v Sars; Maurice Dooley, John Kearney, Micheál Howard, William O Leary (Captain), Jason Pratt, Ryan O Connor, Daniel Lane, Fergus Collins, Gerard Healy, James O Sullivan, Eoin Murphy, Barry Collins. Sub Stephen O Leary.

Scorers; Gerard Healy 2  5, Jason Pratt 1 1, Eoin Murphy 1 1,  Daniel Lane  0 3.

Last Sunday was a memorable and moving day in Thurles when the 125th Anniversary of the Founding of the GAA on Nov1st 1884 was marked. It was a great occasion and relatives of two of the founders were present.
