The highlight of a busy week for the club was the first round of the senior football championship when Clon took on Na Piarsaigh in Bandon on Saturday evening last. The match was played in near perfect conditions and there was a very large Clon support present. The match is fully reported elsewhere in this newspaper and the important thing from a Clon point of view is that the team advanced to round three of the championship and avoided the dreaded back-door route. For that, the team and management can feel proud of a job well done and they can also look forward with optimism to the draw for the real championship, which begins with the third round. On Saturday last Clon had to overcome plenty of adversity, with a number of players unavailable through injury and illness. To add to their woes they lost Conor Mc Manus after only three minutes. Hopefully the team will be free of all these problems before the next outing in this year’s championship. Saturday was a particularly good one for the club as the minor footballers also had a good win in the County championship. They travelled to Ovens to take on Youghal and after putting up a fine display they ran out impressive winners on a score of 4-11 to 2-4. Clon played with the slope and wind in the opening half and led by 2-9 to 1-4 at the break. They dominated the second half but found scoring difficult. Eventually they secured the scores to clinch the tie, with Jonathan Leahy getting his third goal of the match and the outstanding Barry o Mahony adding a late goal to the seven points he had scored earlier. Overall it was a most encouraging performance and the side can now look forward with considerable confidence to the third round draw. On the previous Tuesday this team had scored a good win away to Bantry in the County Premier league, running out winners on a score of 1-11 to 1-10.
The under 12 footballers kept up their excellent form with a big win over Bandon in the league on Friday evening last. They made a strong start and had the game in safe keeping by the break. The gallant Bandon boys came into the game in the second half of an entertaining tie. There was no such luck however for the under 14 footballers in their league clash with Bandon on Thursday last when they were defeated by 3-12 to 2-7. Clon had plenty of possession in this game but failed to take their chances. After an even first half a scoring burst in the opening minutes of the second half saw the Bandon boys race into a big lead and even though Clon dominated for long periods after that they missed too many chances. They are due to play Newcestown at home on this Thursday night in the league.
