Club notes for week commencing 29th April 2013

November 7, 2018

All-Ireland Scor
On Saturday in Derry our senior Set Dancers were competing in the All Ireland, this was the clubs 7th time to reach the All-Ireland in senior set dancing. After putting in a flawless performance hopes were high, but as the result was announced we were disappointed once again. We done to George Coyle, Kevin Flynn, Pat Leavy, Shane Murray, Aoife Rowan, Mary Lynam, Sinead Lynam, and Grainne Kelly who represented the club so successfully this year. Thanks to Alice and Brenda Deihy for all their work in scor and with the set dancers having two groups in an All Ireland in the same year is an achievement – not many can match.
Despite not getting the result this was a very successful  year for Scor in The Downs – the junior and senior figure and set dancers winning county titles and getting to the Leinster final. The set dancers in junior and senior winning Leinster titles and competing in All –Irelands. Congratulations to Moate in winning the novelty act.

Boys under 16’s:
Our U16’s have played 3 league matches to date. Our first match of the year was in Killucan on the 4th of April. Playing against a stiff breeze in the 1st half we went in at half time 5points down. An improved second half performance where we created lots of scoring chances but failed to take them was not enough to close the 5 point gap and it was the home side that won out in the end by 3 points on a score line of Killucan 4-6 The Downs 2-9. Scorers for The Downs: Conor Duncan 4 Pts, Niall Gavin 1Goal 3 Pts, Niall Mitchell 1 Goal, Conor Murray 1 Pt & Jack O Brien 1 Pt.
Our second match was played in Rochfortbridge on 8th April against St Mary’s. We were very slow to start the game and only got going in the last 15 minutes of the first half. Goals from Conor Duncan and Dylan Carroll with some well taken points from Niall Gavin (2), Conor Murray (1), Niall Mitchell (1) and Andrew Kilmartin (2) meant we had a seven point lead at half time. We pushed on in the second half playing into a strong wind with a further goal from Mark Walsh and points from Niall Gavin (3), Philip Doherty (1) and Niall Mitchell (1) to win the game on a score line of The Downs 3-12 St Mary’s 2-6.
Our third game was played on 24 April in Ballinagore against St. Malachy’s/Ballinagore on a wet evening. We started the game brilliantly scoring 5 unanswered points in the first 5 minutes. But the home side came back at us and got a goal and a number of points just before the half time break to lead at halftime by 2 points. The Downs fought hard in the second half in difficult conditions and created some great scoring chances. The vital goal for The Downs came early in the second half by Thomas O Rourke after a well worked move up the right wing. 6 further points were added after the goal and we won out by 5 points in the end on a scoreline of The Downs 1-18 St Malachy’s/Ballinagore 1-13. There was some excellent defending by Darragh Egerton and substitute Darragh Monaghan and goalkeeper Adam Loughlin pulled off a few great saves in the second half. Point scorers for The Downs were Dylan Carroll (4), Andrew Kilmartin (4), Jack O Brien (3), Conor Coughlan (2), Niall Mitchell (2), Conor Duncan (1), Conor Murray (1) and Philip Martin (1).
Panel of players for all games: Adam Loughlin, Darragh Egerton, Conor Duncan, Dara Flynn, James Monaghan, Jack Lynch, Conor Coughlan, Niall Gavin, Dylan Carroll, Phillip Doherty, Conor Murray, Sean Loughlin, Jack O Brien, Niall Mitchell, Mark Walsh, Phillip Martin, Andrew Kilmartin, Jack Kennedy, Jonathan Raleigh, Dara Tone, Paul Lynam, Stephen Colgan, Evan O Riordan, Dara Murray, Thomas O Rourke & Darragh Monaghan.
We have upcoming games versus Ballynacarrigy, St Lomans and Athlone so attendance at training over the coming weeks is vital.
