Under 10s
On Saturday morning last, we hosted the Mullingar Area League Under 10 Blitz supported by Mullingar Credit Union. It was a terrific sight to see over 120 young footballers in action simultaneously throughout Kevin Molloy Park. Thanks to those from the club who assisted in getting the facilities ready and helped out during the morning including Anthony, Steven, Luke, Dave, Peter, Aiden, Ger and Paddy. Proceedings were opened by young Tom Tuite who gave a faultless rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann – go raibh maith agat Tomás. Plaques were presented afterwards to all participants by Westmeath players John Smyth and Martin Flanagan – a big thanks to both for attending. Special thanks must also go to our 6 referees who performed admirably throughout despite the incessant rain – Niamh, Jody, Kevin, Shane, Dave and Dean.
Finally, well done to all the players who gave an exhibition of footballing skills in very difficult conditions.
Training for the under 10s this weekend takes place on Saturday at 5pm instead of Friday.
The following week on Saturday 2nd October the under 10’s will complete their season with The Pat Walsh Memorial Cup Tournament in The Downs. Participating clubs are St. Oliver Plunkett Eoghan Ruadh from Dublin and Meath side Clan na Gael from Athboy. Details to be confirmed next week.

Under 12 County Final           The Downs 5:6 Garrycastle 4:0
On Saturday in terrible condition for football in Kinnegad the under 12 girls secured the county title. The Downs got off to a dream start and had 3 goals on the scoreboard before Garrycastle replied, by halftime Garrycastle had reduced the lead to 0:5. Garrycastle registered a goal soon after the restart but The Downs were able to reply with some excellent points to maintain their advantage  and build on their lead to emerge deserved winners.  The Sharon Smyth memorial cup was presented to the team captains Emma and Niamh by Geraldine Giles to the applause of the large support from The Downs who attended despite the poor conditions.
The win was a deserved reward for all the hard work the players put in throughout the year and for their willingness to constantly improve their skills. Thanks to everyone who helped prepare the food in the clubhouse afterwards it was greatly appreciated to get the tea and hot food after the cold and rain. We also thank the parents who attended the games in large numbers throughout the year, provided transport and were always willing to help out. Team
