Coláiste Iognáid bring the Kate Russell Cup West!

November 8, 2018

After a break of 21 years, Connacht has once again written themselves into the history books!  The Jes Senior Hockey Squad has finally brought the Kate Russell west, following in the footsteps of Dominican College, Taylor’s Hill, who triumphed in 1988.

In a thrilling final against Foyle/Londonderry, the Jes were one-nil down at half time.  An equaliser by Katie Codyre, from a long corner, brought them back into the game.  When Elaine Carey hit the back-board in the fiftieth minute, the Jes thought they had the game won.  But with just four minutes remaining, Foyle/Londonderry bounced back with an equaliser, forcing the game into ‘Extra time-Golden Goal’.  Coláiste Iognáid were not to be denied, & Isabelle Mortimer gave her team the win they deserved with her golden goal.

On their return to Galway this evening, by Garda escort, there were great scenes of jubiliation at the school.  Parents, players, students, & former students gave them a rousing welcome home.
Greenfields supporters were particularly proud of all the Jes players who are club members also, & extend heartiest congratulations to Orla Callanan (Capt), Brenda Flannery (V.Capt), Niamh Callanan, Katie Codyre, Niamh Codyre, Dinah D’ArcyGráinne Mulkerrin & Alison Ryan on their All-Ireland win.

Victorious Captain, Orla Callanan, holds aloft the Kate Russell Cup.
