Connacht Cups & Smith Cup

November 8, 2018

Senior Connacht Cup

Greenfields 1sts   0 – 1   Galway

Galway scored from a short corner early on in the first half.  They then piled on the pressure, & although Greenfields had most of the possession, they couldn’t hit the back-board.  it was a tough match which could have gone either way…….. but not for Greenfields this year.

Junior Connacht Cup

Greenfields 3rds   0 – 2   Athlone

A very young Greenfields 3rds lined out against a more experienced Athlone team in the Junior final.  Although Greenfields defended gallantly, with a superb performance by keeper Ciara Treacy, Athlone scored from a short corner early in the first half.  This was followed by another Athlone goal in the second half, sealing the fate of our 3rds, against this strong midlands team.

Smith Cup

This cup competition is also a Connacht trial of sorts, as the U16 connacht coach Deirdre McDermott was keping a close eye on proceedings, as they were played out on Sunday.

In a very even-sided match, there was no score after the final whistle.
The game then went into penalties – & our U15’s went out in the cruelest of fashions.

Without much of a break, & in scorching sunshine, this brave but tired squad took to the pitch shortly afterwards,in a match against Athlone.  Showing great spirit, they fought to the end, & were rewarded with a goal from Liz Maher.
