Intermediate:

Our intermediate side lost out to Cloonacool on a score line of 0.7 to 0.5 last Saturday evening at Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry. A strong, swirling wind left conditions impossible for free flowing football and both sides duly struggled to gain any rhythm throughout this poor game. Early wides were exchanged before Donal Doherty got C/M first score after fifteen minutes. Matthew Conlon followed with a point soon after to lead by two. Cloonacool responded with two points to level before Kieran Finan kicked over two further scores, one from a free. C/M suffered a real setback at this stage when Kieran Finan was stretchered off with a serious shoulder injury.  Cloonacool got the last score of the half leaving them one in arrears 0.4 to 0.3 at the interval. The second period was a similar stop-start dour, affair with neither team finding any momentum. Cloonacool hit two frees to go 0.5 to 0.4 ahead before Shane O’Brien scored a fine free to level again midway through the half. C/M were finding the upper hand at this stage but crucially failed to convert the chances. Three easy frees missed in this period proved decisive. With five minutes remaining it was Cloonacool who showed the greater desire for the result. They managed to fire over two fine long range frees and finished 0.7 to 0.5 in front at the final whistle. Both sides are through to the quarter finals as a result of points difference outcome with C/M topping the group. It’s back to the drawing board for C/M however after the opening round win over St. Pats but this team is capable of much higher standards and must find that form for the next knock-out round. Best wishes to Kieran Finan who sustained a broken collar bone in the game. Best wishes also to two Cloonacool players injured in the match.
