Coolaney/Mullinabreena GAA
Notes August 10th ‘09
Intermediate:
Our
intermediate side got this year’s championship off to a winning start by virtue
of a six point victory over St. Pats last Saturday evening in Kilcoyne Park
Tubbercurry.
C/M made
the perfect start and really hit the ground running with a 1.03 to no score
lead after ten minutes. Points from Kieran Finan, Shane O’Brien, Shane Kivlehan
and a goal punched to the net by Padraig McHugh laid the platform for this win
as St. Pats never really got to grips with the pace of the game. Further points
from Finan, O’Brien, debutant Enda Kivlehan and Barry Kivlehan left the score
board reading 1.07 to 0.3 at the interval. C/M picked up where they left off
after the break and were 1.12 to 0.5 ahead with ten minutes remaining. P
McHugh(2), O’Brien, Finan, Enda Kivlehan and Donal Doherty were the scorers in
the second half.

U-16:
Our U-16
team provided one of the club’s proudest moments when capturing the A2
championship title against a fine Coolera side last Friday evening at
C/M
re-emerged with one change as Stephen Barrett replaced Fergal Gallagher in the
defence. The C/M lads finally came to life in this half and showed their talent
by going three points up with two frees from Davey and a score form McCormack.
Coolera again responded with two points to stay in the game. The unlucky Davey
again hit the crossbar as C/M were finding the edge in the middle of the park.
Midfielder Raymond Connolly hit two great points with assists form Barrett and
substitute Brendan Doddy, the latter showing delightful skill flicking the ball
to his teammate. C/M were themselves guilty of five wides at this juncture but
Coolera weren’t finished just yet. They always looked dangerous and breached
the defence for a fine goal to level this enthralling game at 1.09 each. It was
end to end stuff now as the sides traded points before the decisive score of
the game. A wonderful team move by C/M found centre forward James Henry in
possession. He cleverly rounded his marker and ran for goal before off-loading
with great vision to the onrushing Declan McCormack who rifled to the roof of
the net to send the C/M support into raptures. True to the game and the Coolera
spirit they hit two points to narrow the gap once again with time running out.
Darren Coleman scored what proved to be the insurance point before Coolera got
the last score of the game. However, C/M were not to be denied on this occasion
and deservedly held on for a magnificent victory. Well done to both clubs for
providing a wonderful exhibition of football hugely enjoyed by the large
support. Best for C/M were Eoin McDonagh in goal with two fine saves, Aidan
Coleman at full back did well under pressure along with Colin Marren in the
corner and Joseph Henry at centre back. The introduction of Stephen Barrett
really steadied the C/M defence while Christopher Lee, Eddie Burke and Seamus
Wimms also worked hard against a good Coolera forward line. Midfield pairing of
Raymond Connolly and Declan McCormack really showed their strengths after a
slow start chipping in with 1.04 between them. Up front Christeoir Davey with
1.05 to his name was excellent despite heavy marshalling. James Henry and
Darren Coleman were also prominent while Fergal Gallager, Pearse Gorman, Barry
Kennedy and Brendan Doddy provided several assists and contributed hugely to
the victory. Congrats to the management duo of Leo Coleman and Colin Connolly
for all their hard work over the year.
