Drom-Inch 0-16
Borrisoleigh 0-14
On Friday evening last
Drom-Inch hosted neighbours Borrisoleigh for the latest round of the county
senior hurling league in the Ragg. Drom-Inch were still in search of their
first victory in this year’s league while Borrisoleigh had already won 2 games.
The game got off to a slow start with both teams finding it hard to find their
scoring range until David Butler pointed a free after David Collins was fouled.
Mark Bourke was lively and very dangerous knocking over 2 points from play. Declan
Ryan and Micheal Butler were starting to win a lot of ball at midfield and Ryan
put David Butler through twice in 5 minutes for 2 points. Borrisoleigh
responded with a pointed free from David O’Connor and another point from Mark
Bourke. Drom made a positional change moving Johnny Ryan onto Bourke and this
quieten the Borrisoleigh talisman. David Butler pointed a great effort from a
line ball from 45 yards out before a superb passing movement involving Joe
Lupton, David Butler and Michael Everard resulted in a point from the latter.
Matthew Stapleton responded with a point for Borrisoleigh before another
splendid point from David Butler after he soloed his way through from midfield
beating 3 men on his way before pointing right on the break for half time.
H-T Drom-Inch 0-6
Borrisoleigh 0-5
The Drom-Inch men were
first off the mark in the second half with a pointed free from David Butler
before Paul Maher responded with a long range point for Borrisoleigh. Two
further points from David Collins stretched the lead to 3 points before a
pointed free from David O Connor reduced the lead again. Drom-Inch then kicked
on and went 5 points ahead through points from David Collins, Seamus Butler and
Joe Lupton. The Borris’ men replied again with a point from the stick of David
O Connor. The score of the game came from the stick of David Butler who weaved
his way through the Borrisoleigh defence and took a very heavy tackle before
tapping the ball over from 20 yards. A pointed free by Johnny Ryan from his own
65 was the last Drom-Inch score for some time as Borrisoleigh hit a purple
patch scoring 5 points on the trot from David O Connor (0-3f) and 1 each from
two subs who had been introduced No. 27 and No.29. Johnny Ryan ended this
period of stalemate for Drom –Inch by landing another long range free before
another point from play by Mark Bourke reduced the gap to a single point
however this score would not fall Borrisoleigh’s way and instead the man of the
hour David Butler scored the game’s final score after taking a pass from Enda
Walsh.
Full Time Drom-Inch
0-16 Borrisoleigh 0-14
Both teams will rue
the amount of wides hit in the hour and although there was a lot of frees there
were some nice passages of hurling by both sides. Best for Drom-Inch were Eamon
Buckley who looked to be back to his best, commanding the half back line, while
Johnny Ryan kept Mark Bourke very quiet when switched across to his side whilst
also scoring some great long range frees. The midfield pairing of Micheal
Butler and Declan Ryan worked tirelessly for the hour and set up several scores
between them. Up front it was all about the 2 Davids-Collins and Butler, who were in
flying form racking up 0-8 points between them from play. They both seem like 2
players who are just finding their form and will have a big part to play in the
coming championship games.
Scorers: David Butler
0-7 (0-1 sideline, 0-2 frees), Seamus Butler 0-1, Johnny Ryan 0-2f , David Collins 0-4, Joe Lupton 0-1, Michael Everard 0-1.
