Toomevara 2-14
Drom-Inch 1-14
On a beautiful sunny
evening in Toomevara, there was a repeat of last year’s county semi final in
the latest round of league games. Both sides were short a few of their
so-called “first teamers” but this did not spoil the standard of hurling. The
greyhounds were first out of the traps with points through Denis Kelly and Ken
Dunne before Drom –Inch responded through a point through following a great
cross field pass from Michael Everard. Toomevara hit several wides in the next
10 minutes before Ken Dunne capitalized on some poor goal keeping to raise the
green flag. Drom-Inch responded with a point from Michael Long following some
nice short hurley passing from John Lillis and Shane Delaney. Toomevara upped
the ante and stretched their lead before the break with points from Ken Dunne
(2), Brian McCormack, Francis Devanney and Willie Ryan in contrast to a
solitary pointed 65” from Drom’s Micheal Butler. This left the scores at half
time Toomevara 1-7 to Drom-Inch 0-3. Toomevara will feel that they should have
went in leading by a lot more at the break had it not been for their erratic
shooting.
H-T Toomevara 1-7
Drom-Inch 0-3
Toome started the
brightest playing with a strong breeze in the second half with 2 points inside
the first 5 minutes from former county star Willie Ryan. David Butler responded
with a nicely taken point following a pass from John Lillis. Ken Dunne replied
with another point from play but this was to be their last for 10 minutes as
Drom went through a purple patch hitting 4 points without reply through Johnny
Ryan (2), Seamus Butler (1f) and David Butler (1). Ken Dunne stopped the Drom
scoring spree with a pointed free followed by another from sub Jim Duignan. Two
more nice individual points from the impressive Seamus Butler followed before
Francis Devanney registered 1-1 in the space of 5 mins. The goal coming
following a long clearance and Devanney got goal side of the Drom full back to fire
home leaving the keeper with no chance. The game seemed to be all but over now
but Drom-Inch upped the ante and hit 4 points without reply from David Butler
(2), Paddy Kennedy (1) and David Collins
(1). Drom-Inch were now playing with their tails up but time was not on their
side and another pointed free from Ken Dunne put Toomevara 6 points up with 3
minutes left. A long delivery from the busy John Lillis was superbly caught by
full forward Paddy Kennedy who finished to the net.
Drom Inch will be
happy with their second half performance after the introduction of several subs
at half time who registered 10 points between them. Eamonn Buckley played very
well from centre back clearing a lot of ball and winning a lot of aerial
tussles. He was ablely assisted by his wing back Shane Delaney who impressed
throughout the hour. John Lillis controlled the midfield well and provided
several assists for scores. The Butler brothers – David and Seamus who were
introduced at half time registered 7 points in the second half between them.
