U-15 REPORT:

Good Creggs Win in Connacht Under-15 Cup

Creggs Rugby 18                             Connemara RFC 10

Creggs continued their good run of form by qualifying for the Supermac’s Connacht Under-15 Cup Quarter-Final by defeating a very determined and skilful Connemara outfit last Sunday in Creggs.

The away team opened strongly and dominated the early proceedings with forwards Dylan Perry, Dillon King and Nicholas Joyce making surging runs, resulting in a deserved try by winger Kevin King after a good back line move. Outhalf Paul Lee failed to convert and Creggs knew they were in a game.

Our boys responded with a more attacking approach from the re-start with second rows James Regan and Brian Collins winning vital possession and setting up quick ball for back row Brian Diffley, Matthew Butt and Robbie Daly to use effectively.

A good back line move ensued when outhalf Shane Dowd skipped one centre to transfer to wing Connor Gore who passed to Donal Kelly and he crashed over for a well-merited score. Shane Dowd kicked a great conversion from the wing to leave Creggs leading 7 points to 5 at half time.

With a light wind helping them in the second half, the Creggs forwards dominated territory and possession. Front row Simon Spain, James Walker and Michael Kelly tackled well and Creggs enjoyed a plentiful supply of the ball. This eventually led to a good backline movement with clever interplay between Kevin Gavin, Shane Dowd, Richard Hughes, Colm Fallon and Donal Kelly, which led to Shane Dowd crashing over in the corner for a great try. Kevin Gavin narrowly missed the conversion, but Creggs were now in control.

However, they spurned a few other opportunities and some poor tackling allowed Connemara to take the game to Creggs in the final quarter and the number 8 Dylan O’Neill scored a deserved try with a few minutes left.

Creggs immediately got a foothold in Connemara territory and an offside infringement led to Shane Dowd kicking a penalty for a final score of 18 points to 10.

Creggs can be pleased with the performance of back row Alex Syrek, James Regan, Donal Kelly, Tomás Clayton, Brian Diffley and Brian Collins.

Creggs will now play either Westport or Ballina in the Connacht Cup Quarter-Final in two weeks’ time in Creggs.

Creggs Rugby Under-15 Team and replacements: Simon Spain, James Walker, Michael Kelly, Brian Collins, James Regan, Matthew Butt, Robbie Daly, Brian Diffley, Kevin Gavin, Shane Dowd, Conor Gore, Donal Kelly, Colm Fallon, Richard Hughes, Thomas Clayton, Alex Syrek, John Keegan, David Lyons, Stephen Glynn, Shay Connolly, Dylan Ward.

UNDER-19 RUGBY

U-19 MATCH REPORT:

Creggs Rugby Under-19s put in good Quarter-Final Performance

Creggs under 19s exited the Supermacs Connacht Cup Quarter-Final after a spirited display away to Monivea on Friday night last.

With fifteen minutes remaining Creggs trailed 12 – 3 but the powerful Monivea outfit pulled away with a couple of quick tries to put a misleading look on the scoreline.

Overall, it was a great effort by the squad and manager Charlie Clarke who had great help from senior players, Mattie Corcoran, Bernard Kilcommins and Ja Hughes.

Well done to all the players and coaches for their commitment and work. This is a young team that are all under age for the Under-19 Connacht League and Cup next season.

On the way home a meal was provided by the club at a restaurant in Mountbellew which went down very well.

Team and replacements: Derek Tully, David Feeney, Stephen Kilcommins, Eoin Gilleran, Gavin Moran, Niall O’Rourke, Conor Doolin, Aidan Leech, David Hoare, Richard O’Grady, Evan Gilleran, Mike Tiley, Chris Duignan, Andrew Callaghan, Enda Tully, Eamon Regan, Shane O’Beirne, and Gearoid Egan.

N.B. Please return your Creggs Lotto tickets to coaches as soon as possible.
