Edenderry lose out in League clash with Rhode

November 8, 2018

Edenderry and Rhode played a great competitive game on Friday night with Rhode edging out the reds by five points in the end.

A very competitive game which saw both battling hard and fair was decided when a momentary lapse in concentration from Edenderry’s defence, allowed Rhode in for the goal that sealed the two points.

Rhode won the throw up and straight from the start they laid down a marker with Donal Hickey pointing after just sixteen seconds. St Mary’s star Sean Doyle leveled matters after a minute with a very well taken score from near the sideline.

Rhode dominated the following ten minutes scoring four, the points coming from Ciaran Heavey, Niall Darby, Paul McPadden and Anton Sullivan.

The reds upped a gear and in the eleventh minute Philip Farrell won possession and sent a long high ball into the square. David Hanlon went highest and palmed the ball in the direction of Johnny Hurst who smashed the ball to the back of the net.

Further points from Niall Darby and Stephen Hannon extended Rhode’s lead to three. Keith McGuinness then had a great chance to level matters but his shot was brilliantly saved and Stephen Guing’s rebound went over the bar for a point.

Dan Nolan pointed a huge score from distance after a assists from Keith McGuinness and Stephen Guing. Keith then pointed from a free for a foul on Sean Doyle. In the twenty ninth minute Rhode again took the lead through Paul McPadden but in the final minute Keith McGuinness leveled affairs after some good play from Derek Kelly and Johnny Hurst.

Half Time:
Edenderry 1-5 0-8 Rhode

The reds started the second half the brightest with the excellent Sean Doyle kicking two great scores within the first two minutes.

However Rhode responded brilliantly and kicked six points in the following twelve minutes without reply, their scores coming from Paul McPadden(2), Donal Hickey, James McPadden and Anton Sullivan(2f).

Keith McGuinness pointed from a free in the sixteenth minute to leave three between the sides after a foul on Sean Doyle. In the closing stages Derek Kelly broke free and found himself one on one but his shot crashed into the side netting.

Just moments later while Edenderry were coming out of defence with the ball a poor hand pass found Anton Sullivan who played through Paul McPadden and he finished to the back of the net. A late Ciaran Hurley point for a foul on Keith McGuinness reduced the deficit to five points.

Full time:
Edenderry 1-9 1-14 Rhode.

It was disappointing for Edenderry to lose this game as is any match but they performed well on the night and but for a few mistakes and missed chances, could have won.

On a positive side, it was great for all to see captain Richie Dalton back in action after his operation and also Robbie Glennon who made his first appearance in nearly two years.
