JUNIOR A:
Saturday, April 9th at 5.30pm in Frenchpark
The Elphin Junior A team were beaten by a superior WesternGaels second team in the Tansey Cup Saturday evening.
On a fine evening for football, Western Gaels, playing withthe aid of a slight breeze in the first half, started brightly and had thebetter of the early exchanges. Good use of a two man full forward line and somesharp shooting by the Gaels forwards saw them establish a healthy lead. Elphinwere competing well but some wayward passing was undermining their hard wonpossession. Michael Callery and Gerry Cregg kicked over some good long rangeefforts and a well taken John Lambert goal meant Elphin were well in thecontest at half time.
In the second half, Western Gaels continued to play thebetter football. Their inside forward line was still causing problems andElphin were struggling to get any meaningful possession to their forwards. Apenalty midway through the second half could have put the game beyond doubt butit was sent wide and a great save from Elphin’s goalie, Dean Feely seemed toinspire his team to greater efforts. A couple of points narrowed the margin butGaels took control again and established a six point lead. A typical surgingrun up field from Martin Travers resulted in a fine point for Elphin’s fullback with the last kick of the game.
