JUNIOR A:

Sunday, March 13th at 2.30pm in Orchard Park, Elphin

The Elphin Junior A team started their Tansey Cup campaign with a good two point win over a strong Castlerea second team. This was an even contest with both teams playing good open football in the first half. The game flowed from end to end but Elphin were making better use of their possession. Scores from Gerry Gregg, David Hynes, Michael Callery and Ronan Beirne saw Elphin edge ahead before Castlerea rallied with a few late scores to leave the bare minimum between the teams at half time.

The second half was a less entertaining affair as Castlerea took a stranglehold on the game. Elphin were working overtime defensively and were finding it very difficult to break out of their own half and get any decent ball into the forward line but Michael Callery did manage a good long range point midway through the half.

With five minutes to go Castlerea had established a two point lead and looked set to close out the game. However, they hadn’t counted on the spirit of this Elphin side; from a great long range free from Michael Callery, the ball was dropped by a defender, and found its way to the back of the Castlerea net and suddenly Elphin were ahead. The next score was crucial and it came from Elphin, Gerard Brady sending over the final score to seal victory.
