JUNIOR A:

Sunday, July 3rd at 1pm in Orchard Park, Elphin

Elphin started their Junior A Championship campaign with a lastgasp victory over a dogged St Faithleachs side.

Played in sweltering sunshine, Elphin started brightly butcould not convert their dominance into scores and only managed two points in theopening half. The experienced St Faithleachs team made better use of limitedpossession to establish a two point cushion at half time. However it could havebeen worse for Elphin if St Faithleachs had converted a glorious goalopportunity shortly before the break.

The second half was end to end with St Faithleachs findingthe excellent Elphin defence difficult to break down while Elphin’s attackcontinued to misfire. Two scores from Martin Cregg and an inspirational scorefrom Elphin’s left corner back, Kevin Beirne were matched by three scores fromthe visitors. A penalty awarded for a trip on Seanie O’Beirne looked to havegiven Elphin the opportunity to take the lead but Gerry Cregg’s spot kick waswell saved by Alan Mannion in the St Faithleachs’ goal.

To their credit the Elphin lads re-doubled their effortsall over the pitch and were rewarded with two points from the trusty left bootof Seanie O’Beirne. With time almost up, Elphin’s captain, Martin Travers, madea typical foray from his centre half position to land a superb winning scorewhich left Elphin jubilant and St Faithleachs deflated.

A minutes silence was observed before the game for the lateSeamus Nolan who was a former Treasurer of the Elphin Club.
