Jubilee Sisters
Congratulations to Sr Philomena and Sr Annunciata, Presentation Convent Fethard, who respectively celebrate their 75th and 65th jubilee this month. Both sisters have accomplished tremendous work in Fethard & Killusty Parish during their many years dedicated teaching at the Presentation Convent and community work at Woodvale Walk. A big thank you and best wishes to you both on this special occasion.
Killusty Soccer Club AGM
Killusty Soccer Club will hold their Annual General Meeting on this coming Friday, 27th June at 8.30 pm in the Tirry Community Centre. All players and committee members are asked to attend.
Legs Waxed for Charity
On Sunday 29th June six willing candidates have agreed to have their legs waxed for Childline, a charity dedicated to all children and young people up to the age of 18 years in Ireland. Childline seeks to empower and support children using the medium of telecommunications and information technologies and can be contacted by freephone 1800 666666 or on their website www.childline.ie
The six willing victims will have their legs expertly waxed at the Castle Inn from 8.30pm onwards and all are invited to come along and join in the fun. DJ Woody will supply music for the night, which may also help dampen the cries of pain!

ACORN Eighties Disco
The ACORN Childcare Committee was established in 2007 to co-ordinate the development of a dedicated Childcare facility in Fethard. This committee have applied for capital funding to finance the initiative and are involved in ongoing negotiations to secure a suitable site in the Rocklow Road area adjacent to local schools. It is envisaged that this facility, when completed, will provide a comprehensive range of childcare services, including infant care, play-school and after school care, to the community of Fethard and surrounding areas.
In an effort to help defray costs the ACORN Childcare committee have organised a number of fundraising events. One such event, is an 80s Disco which is being held on this Saturday night, June 28th, in Slievenamon Golf Club. A great nights entertainment is promised. As well as great music there will also be a Barbeque on the night which will provide sustenance for all those energetic moves on the dance-floor!
The night kicks off at 9.30pm and tickets, priced at €15 each, are still available from Carmel, phone 087 9388324 or Gillian, 086 8546505. Now is the time to start digging-out those long-lost Leg Warmers and listen to your eighties compilations – if you can find a cassette player – so you’ll be ready to revisit your youth on Saturday night. See you there! A special request goes out to those who may have recently moved to the locality or become new parents to come along and support us, you’d never know you might need ACORN in a few years time!
Fethard GAA Club News
In the South Senior football game on Wednesday 18th June in Cahir we recorded our first victory of the year in this competition when we put in a spirited performance in overcoming Ardfinnan on a scoreline, Fethard 2-11, Ardfinnan 0-7, and in so doing got our team back on track to have a go at securing South honours.Best for Fethard were Damian Byrne, Michael Ahearne, Aidan Lonergan, Aidan Fitzgerald, Brian Coen and Jamie McCormack. Team: Paul Fitzgerald, Shane Aylward, Damien Byrne, I Kenrick, Benny Hahessy, Michael Ahearne 0-1, Aidan Lonergan, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-4, Christopher Sheehan 0-1, Jamie McCormack 0-1, Glen Burke, Eoin Doyle 0-2, Declan Doyle 1-0, Brian Coen 0-2 F, and Jason Nevin. Subs used were Tommy Gahan and Adrian Lawrence 1-0.
Fixtures upcoming in Junior A Football are, on this Friday 27th June, we play Ardfinnan in Ned Hall Park at 7.45pm, and Saturday we take on Kilsheelan in Intermediate Hurling at 7.45pm in Cloneen. Our Minor Hurlers are out on Sunday 29th June in O’Sullivan Park, Ballingarry, where we play St Patricks at 12.30 in defence of our title.
The Munster Senior Hurling Final against Clare is on 12th July and don’t forget it is only paid up members will have there name in the hat for raffle of tickets. Please contact any of the club officers: Jimmy O’Shea, Mary Godfrey or Nicky O’Shea, before 5th July to be included.
We again would like to thank all those who supported Bishop Richard Burke Fund so far. We are still open for donations which can be given to Gus Fitzgerald or Mary Godfrey. Bishop Richard himself was born and raised in Burke Street in the premises that is now the Castle Inn.
Our Lotto Jackpot €10,000 was not won. We had four match threes winners who received €40 each: Dick Fitzgerald (St Patrick’s Place, Fethard), Josie Fitzgerald (Kiltinan, Fethard), Rita Doyle (Woodvale Walk, Fethard). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Caroline Quinlan (Tullamaine, Fethard). Thanks to AIB, Main Street, Fethard, for providing the tickets.
Community Games County Finals
Seven year old Darragh Lynch from Coolmore who won a gold medal in under-8 60m at County Finals of Tipperary Community Games athletics for the second year in a row, photographed above with Zoe Stokes, Ballybough who qualified for the final in the girls under-8 event. Well done to Darragh and Zoe and indeed to all competitors from Fethard who travelled to Nenagh last week.

Irish Heart Foundation
The Irish Heart Foundation will hold a Church Gate Collection in Fethard parish this weekend. Please support generously. The recent Fethard Heart-Safe Programme was an initiative undertaken by Fethard & Killusty Community Council, in conjunction with the Irish Heart Foundation, as was the provision of the Slí na Sláinte (Path to Health) designated walking route.
Fethard Ladies Football
Fethard Ladies Football Club committee would like to thank all those who subscribed to their annual church gate collection taken up over the weekend. The club has a lot of expense and your support is appreciated.
County Tipperary Ladies Football Club are hosting a Golf Classic in the very near future. Fethard Club are appealing to all golfers in the area to please put in a team of three in this event, as all Clubs in the county are encouraged to support the county. This promised to be a good day out. Anyone interested in entering a team are asked to please ring Denis Collins at (052) 53317 ASAP.
Scouting Club to benefit from Government Funding
Scouting 27th, Fethard is to benefit from Government Funding under the Dormant Account Fund according to local Fianna Fail T.D., Mattie McGrath. Deputy McGrath said, “I am delighted that Fethard 27th Scout’s Organisation will receive a total of €3300 in funding to support their work.”
Deputy McGrath said, “This funding is directed towards those who need it most and will help young people to enhance services accessed by them and provide essential peer support for them. This club does excellent work and are reliant on volunteer workers who give selflessly of their time for the good of the community. I want to commend them for their work and commitment. I am confident that this funding will help them in their work and enhance the services that they provide.”

My Great Grandmother Maria O’Dwyer was born in Fethard to Edward O’Dwyer and Margaret Fitzgerald in 1865. The house she grew up in was at 1 Kerry Street Fethard. As she was born in 1865 I would doubt that the house she grew up in would still be standing but I would love some info on the area, photos or any stories that may be available that you could email to me.

Friday Night Gig at Butler’s Bar
This Friday night, 27th June, sees the return of well-know Fermoy band Loudest Whisper to Butler’s Bar in Fethard. The band is long established as one of Ireland’s foremost contemporary originals, with their unique blend of folk/rock music. Like fine vintage, the Loudest Whisper sound has been fermenting since 1973 when Brian O’Reilly first wrote his acclaimed Celtic musical ‘ The Children of Lir’. Not to be missed.

Art Exhibition a great success
The teachers and pupils of St. Patrick’s Boys National School would like to thank all those who were able to come along to our School Art Exhibition and make it such a successful event. Everyone put a lot of hard work into the pictures and the display of 128 bright and colourful framed pictures was simply stunning. If you weren’t able to make it, but would like to have your children’s framed masterpieces, the good news is that they are still available to purchase from the school: one picture for €15; two pictures for €25, three pictures for €35 or four pictures for €45. Just send the money in as soon as possible and we’ll arrange delivery.
Once again many thanks to everyone who helped make it such a special occasion in the life of the school this year.
Ronan strikes it lucky twice!
Congratulations to Ronan O’Meara, Cedar Grove, Strylea, Fethard, who struck it lucky twice in the recent joint Cadbury and Wacky Races promotion.
Ronan’s first prize was a trip to watch the Duck Race in Singapore. Fethard Podcasts
A new addition to the Fethard website in the past few weeks are audio podcasts, ‘A taste of Fethard’, which features audio interviews of local individuals and groups. A podcast is an audio or video file available online that can be played on your computer or downloaded to your iPod or MP3 player. By clicking in the subscribe button on the podcast page new podcasts will be downloaded automatically to your computer. www.fethardpodcasts.com
The initial Fethard podcasts were recorded with the help of Tracy Cassidy, a second level student with Tipperary Institute who is currently on work experience here in Fethard. On listening to the podcasts in Saratoga, New York, Mike Cahill sent the following message: “Congratulations to all the young people involved with the new Fethard.com podcasts. Killusty Pony Show
As the forty-fifth anniversary of the Killusty Pony Show approaches, plans are in train for a show to at least match if not surpass the 2007 Show, which broke all previous records. This year’s show will be held at Claremore, Killusty, as have most recent shows on a beautiful field facing the majestic Slievenamon on Saturday 5th July.
The schedule includes classes for most varieties of ponies with seventy classes. It may be obtained from the Hon. Sec. Betsy O’Connor, Knockelly, Fethard, Co. Tipperary, telephone 052-31130 or downloaded at www.irishponysociety.com/news/events. Most classes must be pre-entered and entries close for these finally on Friday 27th June to facilitate the production of a comprehensive catalogue.
There are divisions for In-hand, Broodmare, Welsh, Connemara, Mini (all classes for 123 cms. ponies) Starter Stakes, Show Pony, Show Hunter Pony, Working and Performance Working Hunter, Intermediate and Equitation. Local exhibitors are not forgotten with local riding classes confined to those resident within a radius of 20 miles from the show and handy pony. All locals are welcome to enter in any of the classes and they need not be members of the Irish Pony Society for they may take out a ‘day’ membership which costs €5 each for the owner and rider of a pony but need only be paid once to cover insurance for the whole day.
New classes this year include a first year first Ridden Class for those off the lead rein for the first time and a Ridden Traditional Cob Class. The Fancy Dress and the Dog Show will be held as ever with no entry required for the fancy dress and entries on the field for the Dog Show. Now is the time to get started preparing your dog and fancy dress for the show. Other divisions that can be entered on the day are the Performance Working Hunter and Equitation both ridden and jumping. There is a green working hunter class too that can also be entered on the day. Fence height is 2 ft and the only restriction for competitors is that they may not enter any other working hunter classes on the day. They may enter jumping equitation.
The committee are looking forward to the day and plenty of local support both in competing and in organising. See you on the 5th July!
