Glenflesk pip Rathmore in rip roaring Donal Casey U14 Tournament Final

November 8, 2018

The final of the U14 Donal Casey Invitational tournament took place in Rathmore on Tuesday evening last where the defending champions Glenflesk won by three points over Rathmore, score 3-12 to 3-09

Glenflesk dominated the opening exchanges and scored an early goal and point with the advantage of a slight breeze. Darragh Roche and Gavin Kelly were prominent for Glenflesk. Rathmore with limited posession defended well and were happy to keep the score low. Tom Kelliher, who was playing well in midfield was able to break away from his marker to score the first goal for Rathmore. The game was more of an even contest during the second quarter but Glenflesk held a four point advantage at the break 1-08 to 1-04

Rathmore had the elements in the second half, but conceeded an early goal to leave a gap of seven points. However two goals from the ever busy Michael O’Mahoney after good work from Dean Fitzgerald, Eoin Reen, Shane Ryan and Cillian O’Connor, the gap was closed. At the end of the third quarter the flood lights were on and the large crowd were getting more vocal cheering on each and every contest for posession. It made for a very exciting atmosphere and both teams didn’t dissapoint with honest endevour and no little skill. In the closing minutes Rathmore were ahead by three points, but Glenflesk hit back with a goal and three to win the contest at the death.

The game was ably refeered by Christy Crowley from Gneveguilla and the Vice Chairman of Rathmore & District Credit Union Ltd Dan V. O’Connor was on hand with Rathmore GAA Chairman Eoin Casey to present Glenflesk captain David Crowleywith the cup, both teams with medals and player of the tournament to the centre back from Glenflesk Denis O’Sullivan. Everybody was able to wind down afterwards with a cup of tea and refreshments in the club rooms. Lots of thank to the people who provided the hospitality.
