Glengad Notes January 11th 2009

November 8, 2018

Glengad United earned a hard fought victory when they defeated Rasheney 1-0 in Trawbreaga Park on Sunday. Aided by a strong wind Glengad put Rasheney under pressure in the early stages and hit the front when Paul McGonagle latched onto a poor clearance and volleyed past the keeper from the edge of the area.

Glengad had chances to extend their lead when first McGonagle found himself with time on the edge of the area to get his shot away but he failed to connect as he would have liked and the ball went behind for a goal-kick and later in the half good link up play between Terence Doherty and Paul A McDermott set McDermott up for a shot but his effort was well saved by the ‘keeper. Into the second half and Rasheney put the Glengad defence under pressure from the start but they failed to create any clear cut chances and their only chance of note in the half came from a long range effort from the edge of the area that was brilliantly saved by Michael McLaughlin in the Glengad goal. Glengad had chances to kill the game off when firstly Stephen McLaughlin shot past the post following a quick break and then Paul McGonagle shot wide with two Glengad players well positioned at the back post. Rasheney pushed late on to find the equalizer but were kept out by strong Glengad defending. Glengad move back to the top of the table in place of Rasheney and maintain their unbeaten run for the season after this victory.

Glengad United face two tough away trips in the month of January that will test their aspirations for promotion and their unbeaten run to the limit. Glengad travel to Carrowmena on the 18th and follow this up with a game against Illies Celtic on the 25th. In the Buncrana Credit Union Cup, Glengad have been given a home draw against Illies Celtic.

Glengad United would like to inform all supporters who are traveling to the FAI Umbro Junior Cup game against City United in Sligo on February 1st to take note that Rally Ireland will be taking place in Sligo and the surrounding area on that weekend and with stages set for Rossnowlagh and Donegal Town on the Sunday to expect heavy traffic. For more information, contact Denis McGonagle or Liam McClean.

Glengad United Reserves recorded an impressive 3-2 victory over a strong Redcastle United team in blustery conditions in Colmcille Park on Saturday. Glengad had a lot of early pressure and hit the front after 10 minutes when Eamonn B McColgan played a through ball to Liam Doherty and he toe poked the ball under the advancing ‘keeper for a well taken goal. Glengad extended their lead on the stroke of half time when the Redcastle defence failed to clear a corner kick and Jason Doherty crossed for Brian Doherty to head home at the back post to make it 2-0.

After the break Redcastle pushed hard to get back into the game and got a goal back when Davenport turned the defender and shot low past the ‘keeper for a well taken goal. Redcastle drew level when a free-kick just inside the Glengad half was played into the back post and the Redcastle centre-half, who had come up for the set-piece, lost his marker and fired home from close range to make it 2-2. Both teams had chances to win the game most notably when Redcastle hit the bar but it was Glengad who took the points when Christopher McLaughlin scored from close range after his first effort had been well saved by the ‘keeper. Best for Glengad were Darren Doherty and Jason Doherty.

Glengad United Reserves follow this game with two home matches against Carn F.C. on the 18th and Clonmany Shamrocks on the 25th of January, both kick off at 11:00. Glengad will be looking to continue their strong start to the league campaign with these home matches.

In the Hannon & Grenne Fr. O’Gara Cup, Glengad Reserves have been given a home draw against Moville Reserves. Moville are currently top of the Reserve league and will provide stern opposition but with home advantage Glengad will fancy their chances.
