In what proved to be a tough first round game against a strong St Finbarr’s outfit it was the Carrigaline lads who came out on top thanks to some hard work and the ability to take their scores at critical times during the game. This was always going to be a difficult game to win but the Carrigaline lads were well worth their two point victory. Playing against a strong breeze in the first Carrig took their time to settle and with the scores level they conceded the games only goal. Despite this setback Carrig suck to their task and continued to match their opponents. Carrigaline took some excellent scores particularly from play with Stephen Corcoran, Peter Ronayne, Tony Murphy and Michael O’Sullivan on target. Carrig also had four scores from frees with Joe Moran, who was outstanding throughout, Stephen Corcoran and Simon O’Brien to leave Carrig trailing at the break 0-8 to 1-8.

Turning to play with the wind in the second half Carrig played more confidently and took the game to their opponents from the throw in. Although never looking like scoring a goal, their urgency at the back kept St Finbarr’s scores to a minimum while adding to their own tally. Simon O’Brien, Stephen Corcoran and Michael O’Sullivan were a constant threat to the Barr’s upfront while Joe Moran and Colin Lynch were commanding at the back. Stephen Corcoran was solid from frees, while Corcoran, Simon O’Brien, Tony Murphy and two Michael O’Sullivan points, one at the end from all of 70 yards, ensured victory for the Carrig lads on a score line of 0-16 to 1-11. Carrigaline now await the third round draw to decide who their next opponents will be.

This year’s South East Junior Hurling Championship begins next Saturday in Ballygarvan against Ballinhassig at 7.30pm. This should prove to be a good game of hurling so do come out and give the lads as much support as possible.
