Ballinabranna rue missed penalty

Ballinabranna          0-8           Clonmore        0-8

Having dropped down from senior last year, Ballinabranna had a difficult League but they seem to have steadied the ship and could play a big part in the destination of the 2009 Intermediate Championship. After beating St Andrews in the first round last week, the men from the ridge almost took another big scalp at Dr Cullen Park on Sunday night. Leading by 0-7 to 0-5 on 44 minutes, they were awarded a penalty and the chance to open up a five point lead over Clonmore but Brian Kinsella’s well struck shot hit the post and rebounded to safety.

Realising that they had been let off the hook, Clonmore upped their game and with the introduction of Peter Kiernan they began to do better at midfield. Clonmore proceeded to kick three points in a row, from John McGrath (50 mins), Pauric Lawlor (51mins) and a pressure free by Gavin Byrne on 60 mins to put themselves 0-8 to 0-7 in front with normal time up. However, deep into injury time, B’branna centre-back Ray Buggy put in a great block on David Mulvany to prevent Clonmore from going two points up. The ball was swept up-field to B’ranna forward Damien Sheehan whose long shot for the equalising point went wide, but referee John Dunphy spotted a late tackle and gave a 13 metre free which the accurate Brian Kinsella happily slotted over for the equaliser.

Both sides could have won and lost this game – B’branna will rue their missed penalty which probably would have put them on the road to victory but know they were fortunate to be awarded the late free. Clonmore can point to 12 wides, 5 balls kicked into the goalkeepers hands and a shot for a goal by Ronan Doyle which was pushed onto the post by keeper Jason Carter. So in the end, the draw will keep both teams ticking over nicely in the Championship, but there is room for improvement in both camps.
