Mayo Gaels 1-8 Lahardane 1-6

In what proved to be a thrilling encounter the Intermediate team gained their first two valuable points at home to Lahardane on Saturday evening.

With the wind playing a vital role in the first half, the Gaels notched up their first score of the game with a point courtesy of Johnny Griffin followed by a Damien Quinn point from play. Lahardane notched up two points but a free from Johnny Griffin followed by another Damien Quinn point saw the Gaels ease their way forward. The sending off of a Lahardane player saw the referee blow for half-time to leave the score 0-4 to 0-3 in the Gaels favour.

The second half was tense from the very off, and the Gaels knew they would have to put their bodies on the line to overcome the away side. Lahardane started off sweetly with point on the 2nd minute of the half, but was cancelled out by a Sean Boyle point and frees from Danny Burke and Damien Quinn. A penalty from Johnny Griffin and Mally Byrne free saw the Gaels move ahead and it was only in the dying minutes that a Lahardane goal narrowed the gap, to leave the final score Mayo Gaels 1-8 Lahardane 1-6.

In a game centered around sending offs, stoppages in play and injuries it must be said that Paul Mannion had an outstanding game in goal in his first line out for the senior side, making many vital saves for the team.
