Ardnaree 3-17 Mayo Gaels 1-9

Going into this league game with high expectations after securing our quarter-final championship place the Gaels came in for a shock losing 3-17 to 1-9 in this round 8 league affair on Saturday evening.

Ardnaree began the livelier notching up two points, one from a free in the opening minutes of the half, before Johnny Morrin put the Gaels on the scoreboard with a free on the fourth minute. With Ardnaree adding another score to their tally the Gaels were unlucky to be denied a much sought after goal chance. The hard work of Niall Brett paid off as he set Barry Commons up for a well taken point from play to leave one point between the sides. Ardnaree soon responded before Johnny Morrin pointed again for the Gaels. Our intermediate squad got their break soon after with Johnny Morrin and Danny Burke combining play to see Danny produce an excellent goal from quiet a distance out to put the Gaels two in front. Both sides exchanged points towards the latter of the half with Danny Burke producing for the Gaels before Ardnaree settled up the half with 1-1 in quick succession to leave the score line 1-4 to 1-6 in favour of Ardnaree come halftime.

The second half was a disappointing one on the Gaels front with Ardnaree notching up 2-11 in what seemed to be score after score throughout the half. The Gaels did however manage to reduce the deficit with points from Danny Burke (0-3, 1f), Mally Byrne (0-1, 1f) and Johnny Morrin (0-1) to leave the score line 1-9 to 3-17 come the final whistle. This defeat all but ends chances of promotion in the league.
