Mayo Gaels 1-9 Westport 6-7

Our intermediate team ended their season when they were comprehensively beaten by a slick Westport side in the championship quarter final played in Clogher on Saturday evening. They only trailed by a point at half time but a second half goal fest from Westport left the final score line of Mayo Gaels 1-9 Westport 6-7.

The Gaels started brightly and got the first two scores of the game with a Mallie Byrne free and a Johnny Morrin point from play. Westport hit back with their first goal after ten minutes and also added a point to leave then two points clear. The sides swapped the next five scores with the Gaels scored coming from a Danny Burke, a Mallie Byrne free and a fine point from play by Jonathan Griffin. This left the half time score 0-5 to 1-3.

There was a disastrous start to then second half as Westport fired two goals and a point inside the first five minutes to leave then eight points clear 3-3 to 0-5. A Mallie Byrne free gave the Gaels some hope before when Westport kicked two points a converted a dubious penalty to kill of the game with fifteen minutes to go as Westport lead 4-6 to 0-6. Danny Burke added another free but Westport again responded with yet another goal and a point. The Gaels showed some pride and fighting spirit with a Jonathan Griffin point from play and a Niall Brett goal. A ruthless Westport side added their sixth goal in the final minutes before another Danny Burke free was the final score of the game leaving the final score 6-7 to 1-9.

It was a very disappointing end to the season as the Gaels suffered one of their biggest ever championship defeats. Only young goalie Paul Mannion (who could not be faulted for any of the goals), Anthony Byrne and James Fallon could be pleased with their performances.
